Two nights ago I did a gig at a Chamber of Commerce event at a very high end community center. I was hired by the chamber, as was a social media guy, and a video guy. There was also an independent person taking photos. What we all had in common (and this has never happened before!) was we were all using Sony equipment. Now I know this will ruffle the gentle feathers of so many on this blog, but the reality is that market share is everything, and I as a Sony shooter am even amazed at how much is changing in the professional sphere. Years ago it was rare to find a pro shooting Sony, and now it seems that we are the majority. For there to be four image makers at an event and all of them using Sony had me pretty shocked. People vote with their feet and their money, and the other brands have to be on notice to up their game.

Embarrasing Comment on my last cruise [NCL Norwegan Sun] the Photo Shop was selling/featuring only Sony.
ALL the Ships Photograpers were shooting Nikon.

You lost me. What's the point to this post? More people use Sony??

Who cares (other than the camera equipment companies and others affiliated with the industry)? The herd mentality found on this site is generally more misleading than helpful and should be taken with a grain (or is it noise) of salt. Conventional wisdom usually isn't.

About five or six years ago I was a Sony user for about three weeks and happily switched back to my previous equipment because it was far better for my purposes.

I'm glad you like your Sony stuff because it is nice when people are happy. Enjoy.

They picked them when all Canon had to offer was the EOS-R I believe. There will not be that restriction after the EOS R1 is used at the Paris Olympics. I have read reviews from professional photographers who use many different brands using the Canon R1 have said this new Canon is now king of cameras without breaking their NDA's.

Ruffled feathers? Who cares what camera you use? Use the camera you like.

You however seem to be implying I should use the same brand as you. This seems to be a common trait among ‘certain’ brand owners. If thats the way you feel, that is also fine with me. It will have no effect on what camera I choose to use.

And Viva la completion, it’s good for buyers.

Sony was smart buying Minolta, one of the few lens manufactures making their own glass. A high quality manufacture that Leica thought was good enough to make their 500 (I think it was 500) mirror lens. Their current lenses are as good or better than what Nikon and Canon are making and because they jumped on the mirrorless early, they currently have a better selection.

Actually, the latest 2024 top sales figures from Yodabashi camera stores, and other top camera stores in Japan show more Sony models in the top ten in sales in Japan than any other brands. I have separate threads here in UHH that list the sales figures in Japan, for the year of 2023 and for now in 2024. Please check those out and be accurate here.

Cheers and best to you.

"This is from the Japanese BCN association for camera sales for 2023.

1.Sony ZV-E10
2.Sony A6400
3.Canon R50
4.Canon R10
5.Canon M2
6.Olympus E-P7
7.Nikon ZFc
8.Olympus E-PL10
9.Olympus E-M10IV
10.Sony A7IV"

I have no doubt looking at the professionals and professional cameras that Sony will be at top. And even with all the camera sales in Japan for 2023, Sony has the top spot even if they are not the professional end of Sony. I think it is impressive that the professional oriented A7 mkIV did make 10th on the list. This camera had to compete with all the cameras bought by people wanting something better than their phones and still not have to sell their first born to get it. Sony, when they entered the camera market, said they wanted to be number one. And as far as I can see, they are definitely number one to the chagrin of Canon and Nikon. But based off the BCN, not everyone is willing to go as high as the professional level. And this would be as expected considering what I would expect the ratio of general public to professional photographers.

As far as what I would expect at concerts and sporting events, covered by professional photographers, it will most likely be seriously dominated by Sony.

Sony has the pro market, no doubt.

More importantly, they own the sensor market.

They make coin from their competition...a one way street of profit for them.[/quote
Canon has their own foundry. They don’t use Sony sensors.
I didn't say all...

Sony owns 42% of the sensor market. Canon has 1%.

Sony has avenues of revenue across the market...like an octopus.

In just over a decade too.

I used Canon gear for 40 years. In 2918 I wanted to go mirrorless and did extensive hands on research. To me, ergonomics was as important as image quality. I chose a brand that I never would have considered in the past. I chose a Fujifilm X-T3 and I still have no regrets.
What's important is that you choose a camera that you feel is right for you and not be swayed by sterile lab reviews or by people who obviously will reccomend what they use.
