How come 80% of cameras and gear for sale on here are Nikon ??? Why did you buy it in the first place or are they that bad. From a PENTAX owner. Never had one fail and I have owned 14 of them from film to dige.

The only valid answer will come from a survey of people who have sold Nikon equipment on UHH. Are they upgrading, switching brands etc? One thing that comes to mind is that people are selling some pretty old Nikon lenses that are not fully compatible with their newer cameras. Another is that their mirrorless cameras are a big leap from their DSLRs, and a lot of people are switching. I don't know. Let's hear from people who have sold their Nikon equipment. Opinions from non-Nikon equipment owners would not be valid.

It's simple. Many more Nikons are made and sold than lesser brands like Pentax.

Most of it is people that have switched to mirrorless and updated their lenses to the Z lenses. The rest of them are mostly people who have decided to go with lighter gear than what they owned.

A lot of Nikons being sold are DSLRs as people transition to mirrorless. Sony has been mirrorless for so long that most people who shoot Sony already have mirrorless so no need to sell off their DSLRs. I can't speak for Canon but feel there are a lot of Canon shooters that are also transitioning to mirrorless. As for where they are selling off their DSLRs is anyone's guess. You won't see as many Olympus and Fuji simply because the market share they command is much smaller than Nikon, Canon, and Sony.

Canon has dominated the camera market since the late 1990s. They've sold more cameras than Nikon since then.

Personally, I think the UHH community is disproportionally Nikon heavy, relative to Nikon's current #3 (12%) of the global market share. Given Canon continues to sell more digital cameras than Sony #2 (26%) and Nikon combined, logic would suggest the EOS technology would dominate the quantity of resale equipment too. That Canon owners buy, use and achieve more success, thus keeping their equipment longer, is a likely conclusion from these observations.

No I just sold 3 of my 9 ME Supers from my wedding business days. The two K-1000 I have I can still use the lens on my newest DLSR cameras. Pentax has kept the same lens mount from the film days and has always had great glass.

So many of us old folk grew up knowing, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

What UHH and other photography forums provide is a concentration of people who have a more than casual interest in photography. Outside of that you have people who have only a casual interest in photography. It could be saying something that where such a concentration exists there is a greater preference for Nikon cameras and where the interest in photography is more casual there is a preference for other brands such as Canon. Taking the population of photographers as a whole (both serious and casual) I suspect that the casual photographers outnumber the serious photographers quite considerably. If that's the case, and if casual photographers show a preference for Canon, that would explain the overall greater popularity of Canon (but not in a flattering way).

Somebody is probably going to mention that professional photographers show an overall preference for Canon. I suspect that it's a legacy thing which is as persistent as it is because of the investment in lenses over the past two decades. Another factor is probably brand loyalty based solely on familiarity. Canon got an early lead where digital photography is concerned, and investment in equipment plus a familiarity-based fondness has given that early lead an element of persistence.
