This weekend was the 75th Homestead Championship Rodeo. With around 300 competitors it was a busy weekend with all 3 performances sold out. I covered Sunday for the South Dade News Leader. I'll post action shots here and some people shots in the regular gallery later. R5 with 100-500 and R6 with 24-70.

Thanks. I shoot RAW and cull and edit in Lightroom. About 2K down to 600ish on first cut. Edited about 40 or so and exported 20 to DropBox for delivery to my editor.

...lots of sports guys shoot jpeg and upload right away. I'm like you in my pageantry shots, but since they're about individuals I don't cull and just go through 'em one by one (I've done 10k in a day (but average 6 to 8k), then break it down to the single groups in LR and do each one in order of appearance. Got a pretty good system, and the moms get good product in the end.
When I'm bursting wildlife or surfing, however, you can bet I cull!

Damn you guys shoot that many shots? I quit that long ago. Most games I shoot 600-800 and that's a lot for me. I shoot for MaxPreps.com, high school sports. From there I cull down to 100-250. Max likes to keep under 250. They say customers don't like to look at more than that. Love the rodeo photos we don't get to see much of that on here. Thanks BE SAFE!!

It has been decades since I shot a rodeo. These are wonderful shots.

The numbers you've tossed out are very close to what I get. However, I keep about 10% and wind up with about 60-70. I try to follow the two eyes and the ball rule of thumb, and if I see only backs, they are gone, too. I do make some exception for instances in which I know someone is looking for a person. But, yeah, Tom. 700-800 is a lot for me, too. Thank heaven for Photo Mechanic!

I have Photo Mechanic but have only used it 5-6 times. I usually load mine, go through and cull out all of the out of focus so bad that Topaz doesn't have a chance, (backs, head chops, people in front of main subject, etc). then go through and do post and if Topaz needed. I will say I love Topaz Photo AI, it has really saved a lot of photos that I normally would have tossed. I dropped my camera and lens 3-4 weeks ago. my 80-200mm f/2.8 was showing an FEE error. Sent to Nikon and they wanted $500.00 to fix BS. I ended up buying one from B & H used but rated 9 which is good for $550.00. Will start some basketball soon now that I have that lens. Thanks BE SAFE!!

Thanks for nice comments and the work flow discussion. For me Lightroom has gotten so fast for import that I’m not using Photo Mechanic anymore. As to the number of shots think it really varies by sport / event and to a certain amount by camera. 30 FPS adds up pretty quickly.

Hugh these shots are great. I can smell the manure, etc. through your photo eyes. Good work.

Hi All:
I will chime in on this subject if I may?
I cover football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball and soccer. I also shoot (like Tom) for Maxpreps and like to shoot about 300-400 shots per game. Now I am shooting bb and that's what I average. I shoot with a Nikon D4 after the game download to photoshop. Run the batch through Denoise so for two games runs around 6 hours I think. I go to sleep at that point.
Then edit and delete the bad ones.

...that's prolly about what I would do at a football or basketball game, too. I shoot 5fps for stuff like that, it allows me to get "ones" but I can press and get a decent sequence. For wildlife and surfing I usually go 15fps because there are many nuances to wing/wave positions (Z9 "native" is 20, but to me that's a little much). But I could be shooting a band competition of 32-40 groups...I want to get at least 200 keepers per group, alot of the time I get more, but since I process each group independently and shoot alot of portraits. I don't cull (since my D4 days I'm spoiled by very few focus problems...now it's even "worse" lol)...
