Nice work, Dean, especially the night shots and the water tank.

Your nice work here brought back good memories for me. I spent a lot of time in Austin from '73 to '76 ( business interests ). I really took to the hill country...did some serious dirt biking all out in the massive area. I've been told that, because of the explosion of the population of people and businesses there, a lot of the charm to the place has faded a good bit. Any comment on that?

After spending 1 1/2 years in Texas I found the state to be much more than anticipated, water and green were not among the list of favorites. USAF knew what it was doing when it placed one of it's Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) bases in Big Spring, TX. There was absolutely nothing to divert our attention from the aviation training we were there to receive. We even had to travel 40 miles to Midland just to feast on a Big Mac with mickey D's fries. One of our Iranian students found and marked a tree for a reference point. An aviation super-star name of Connie Edwards had his ranch a few miles away and occasionally we stood down when he came out to play. He was the aviation consultant for the war movie "The Battle of Britain" and was paid for his services with old, vintage aircraft. In his arrival message the base commander told us we were in the "exact dead-center of absolutely nowhere" and he knew of what he was speaking. I did enjoy the time spent in Texas. I was able to visit and see several shrines like Padre Island and the Alamo, and the golf course on base was green during the month of June. Nine months after graduating I had been to Saigon, Viet Nam, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Amman, Jordan, and several other places I had only read about. Texas had been my "jumping-off" point for a part of my life I never saw coming. During the next three years I was able to travel all over the northern hemisphere. The Viet Nam conflict ended and I was no longer in Texas! Life was good.

I moved to TX in 1977, moved away in 1978, came back in 1980 and stayed for 41 years. I've been gone for three years and miss it!

Also from Texas, but must disagree with Dallas - too many people. And the Alamo is a must - in mid-January, Tuesday morning at 6:30. No tourists.
