read the reviews on 1" sensor compact Zooms ... they fit in your pocket, with an adapter will accept 52mm filters and mod lenses... Their abilities are like a three-ring circus of images, bursts, videos, time laps, etc.
AND Very light weight.

Not a compact camera, but you *might* want to consider a GoPro Hero. I bought one many years ago for just such trips and have upgraded over the years. I now have the GoPro Hero 11 and it really takes excellent photos - and you can use it in the water and underwater. I took it to the Bahamas last year and got some good pics of our family swimming with stingrays. The BIG drawback: There isn't really any zoom or control over your settings. Or let's say it's marginal at best. But I set mine on Auto and was very happy with the photos. I carried it on a lanyard so my hands were always free unless I was shooting. On dry land, I used my Z6ii. As far as a compact camera, I have a Sony RX100 VII and it does take excellent photos. I've never really needed more zoom than it provides.

I took my Nikon P900 and a Canon SX710 on our Galapagos trip in 2019 and was satisfied with the results. You’ll give up a little bit (some folks will say a lot) but what you gain with portability and flexibility more than makes up for that fact. I’m a serious Nikon user for historical reasons, but the location of the video button on both those cameras is a real plus. The Nikon P1000 is pretty heavy. There are later versions of the SX710.

Olympus TG 6! It’s good to 50 feet underwater, shock proof (survived a 20 foot accidental toss onto hard pavement without even a scratch), dust proof, has WiFi, video capability, an underwater mode, f/2 (f/2.8 & f/8) and a super macro mode. I have this camera and take it with me on all my trips. I think there may be a newer model out. BTW, the image quality is excellent, especially for what it is. There’s even a small telephoto lens you can add to it. Yes, the aperture selection is limited but it hasn’t ever been an issue. I’m envious of your trip.

It’s waterproof to 50 feet.

If you’re going to be possibly exposing your camera to water, then probably your best choice would be the Olympus TG-6 Tough. It’s waterproof and just plain tough. You won’t be able to do a lot of controlling of settings as it’s pretty much automatic or semi-automatic, but it’s a great camera for that type of environment.

Totally agree. I have the TG-5 and have found it to be an excellent compact camera, particularly in wet environments. I take it snokeling, fishing, etc. and found it easy to use, durable and takes excellent pictures.

Any 1 inch zoom compacts are great to take in these situations. I have the Panasonic ZS-100 (ZS-200 is the latest version) as well as the Canon GTX Mark II. Both are very versatile and packed with features. The Panasonic has too many features to list here and the Canon has a very sharp and fast lens, although it has a more limited zoom range (24mm-100mm). The Canon is also hard to buy right now, as it has become very popular due to some TikTok influencers.

Hi! We are going to the Galápagos Islands in May and I would rather not carry my Canon 5D MarkIII and lenses. Especially because we’ll be snorkeling and on a boat. I’m looking for a good compact camera possibly waterproof but not a deal breaker. I would love to hear about small cameras you have used for your adventures.
And any Galopogos photo advice would be awesome!

Advice is to bring hard surface knee pads and heavy duty walking or hiking shoes for the volcanic surfaces you will be on most of the time.

I use a Canon GX5 2 when traveling light.
Not waterproof but otherwise a great travel camera.

I bought myself a small compact Nikon for trips where I don't want to take my gear. Rarely used and two years later when I got it out for the second time the shutter froze up. Only around 100 shots. Nikon wanted more to fix it then I paid. Never again

I can speak from personal experience, the LUMIX Z100 is definitely not waterproof. Mine was repairable after it got thoroughly soaked.

I also have a Sony RX100iii and a Sony Raccoon; both are nice small travel cameras. The RX100iii has a faster lens; the RX100vii has more reach.

They will fit in a jacket or coat pocket.

I have a Sony DSC RX100 VII which I now take on trips, and it does a great job. It is a little noisier than my Sony A6600 at high ISO's, but Lightroom latest De-noise takes care of that. And it's much smaller and lighter, has a great pop-up viewfinder and built in flash.
Highly recommended!

Ricoh/Pentax tough Camera. OM7. Sony RX100VII. Canon G7X All are excellent small cameras. Decide your price point and your priorities because they have different specs and prices.

I agree with others the T6 is a great little camera, I would like a couple more exposure options but the zoom is great and the photos are too. Just get a couple extra batteries I use generic ones they work fine. Because without a view finder you are using the LCD all the time
