The drives for our summer trip to Europe both started and ended at the Charles de Gaulle airport of Paris. For both these drives from Paris to Switzerland and then the return drive, we made a one-night stopover in different cities in northeastern France. Both stops were in places that we had not previously visited and we were quite positively surprised by both of them. This post will provide an overview of these two French cities at the beginning and end of our drive.

Our first stop was in VESOUL in the Haute-Saône department, a town of some 15,000 inhabitants, first documented back in the year 899. The first 3 pictures below portray this charming place. We had a very pleasant evening here with nice, almost cool temperatures, compared to what we experienced for the entire month afterwards. The following link provides some more info from Wikipedia on Vesoul: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesoul

Our final stop on the way back from Switzerland to Paris was in the town of TROYES in the Champagne Department with some 62,000 inhabitants. We heard good things about this stop, so our expectations were quite high, but we were definitely NOT prepared for a city core that was seemingly almost entirely out of the late Middle Ages. It is a city with a rich historical past, situated on the River Seine which 140km/90 miles further down-river flows through Paris. Its medieval old town features narrow, cobbled streets lined with hundreds of colorful, half-timbered houses, mostly dating from the 16th century. I went almost trigger-crazy on that afternoon following our arrival - and got up especially early in the morning before our departure to the Paris airport to explore the town further, resulting in hundreds of more images. For more information, click on the following link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troyes

I upload only one post today, as this marks the end of my images from our 2023 trips. Tomorrow I will start with a similar, but shorter and less versatile series covering our 2022 trips to Europe, covering mainly Switzerland plus short stays in the UK, Rome/Italy and the French Riviera.

Thanks Eugene - Vesoul was nice, but Troyes was unbelievable, we certainly did not expect THAT - and in such a proliferation. But like many of the French towns we ventured into in 2023 as shown earlier in this series, and during so many other previous visits - these places most often are full of surprises - day and night!

Thanks Vince for your appreciation - France has so much historic town cores and buildings, and Troyes comes really out at the top!

Do You know what?
You shot the set I dreamed to capture...but Troyes is far away from home (Dijon...ca. 175 km)

Thank you Dan, glad you liked these images.

I was actually much closer to you even, stayed one night in Dijon at the end of April. I did post a couple of pictures of Dijon, also of Vézelay, Semur-en-Auxois and of course Beaune. You probably missed these, they were in set 3 of this series, on January 19, if you want to check up. - I was actually contemplating sending you a message when we were over there, knew that you live in Dijon, but then didn't follow through as I didn't know if it would bother you - we have only commented on each other's posts a couple of times. You sure live in a beautiful part of France - but then France certainly has more than its fair share of beautiful places! We enjoyed very much our renewed drive through the Loire valley, and in the general Bourgogne area and will certainly pass through this area again, as I usually start out our European trip with staying a week to 10 days in Paris, and then make it with some always varying detours to la Suisse.

You sure like the half-timbered houses. So do I, particularly your images made at night. Based on your picture of the lawyer on his way to court, they appear to hold them in higher regard than we do. Really like the image of street lighting at dusk.

You are definitely right as far as the half-timbered houses are concerned - I guess to me they are rather unusual, as in the part of Switzerland I grew up, these do not exist, while they do in other parts. They just spell old, interesting and intriguing to me. - Not so sure about your take on the lawyer - that they put a statue of a lawyer on the street sort of would agree with your thought, on the other hand, it looks to me like he is portrayed having his nose high up in the air, which might mean the opposite. Glad you liked these pictures.
