If you're looking at a D800 I'd suggest the D800E - not much difference in price.

A local fellow has one for a fair price, ~20,000 Shutter actuations. Tempting to try FX...Worth buying?
$400-550
Depends what you shoot & expect out of the camera & the price. Nikon would sell a refurbished with a warranty if they had one for over $2k US. Also, Nikon stopped service on them December 2023. You should get lots of years out of it if it was well cared for.
My experience is pretty limited with the D800 but if you ask me the camera does very well for architecture, landscapes and portrait photography. The D750, another camera where my experience is pretty limited, is a more modern camera and in addition to what the D800 can do it can also be used for wildlife photography. My retired ophthalmologist just return from Africa where he used his new Z8 and the D750 for wildlife.
Leica is making lenses in Japan and Zeiss has been using Cosina, also in Japan, to make lenses. Nikon is using China for some of their optics. Olympus has been using China to manufacture some of their cameras along with Vietnam. I believe some Leicas have been manufactured in Canada and Portugal. Panasonic is making Leica lenses in Japan and as has been already mentioned Sony is making cameras in Thailand.
Even without knowing what "fair price" means, I'd pass on it. So many iterations of Nikon cameras have been introduced since the D800. As has been mentioned, even the D810 is much better. My D750 has a built-in flash and articulating screen, weighs 10 oz. less. Look for a different Nikon at a "fair price", there are plenty out there.
The D800 does have a built in flash.

I don't think that the OP was thinking of any particular camera until someone offered their camera for a "fair price." That camera is the D800. It's going to be yes or no.
Many D800 bodies had focusing issues with the outer points…if I remember right it was especially prevalant on the left side
If you really want a D800, and it is in good condition, then a price of $350-400 seems about right to me. Just make sure it comes with the battery charger and the right Nikon battery.
The D800E is almost the same camera. It was offered at about the same time as the D800 and is a bit sharper than the D800 in that there is no Anti-aliasing (AA) filter on the sensor.
I am still using my D800e even though I have a D850 and a Z9. Its role is mainly as a backup camera or an additional camera for landscapes and macro when I do not want to change lenses on my other cameras being used for action photos. I also use it for travel.
O.K., Thank you to all who addressed my question. Some good things to consider!

I think that's OK. I would prefer the D800 than the D810.
As I recall, the D800 had some issues that were addressed and corrected in the D810.
In Ireland, 850 Euro hardly used , but you'll get ones worked to death for 500.
I also have a couple of D-800 that I am willing to part with and not nearly as many actuations as the ne you're looking at. Not sure what their price is but I would let mine go for $425.00 with battery and charger. I'd have to get the camera out and take a picture so that I could find out just what that number is. Let me know and if not no big deal. The camera is in very good condition.
Thanks, David
There's more risk of Moire in the D810 and the D850, and also of course in the D800E. Of you're worried about Moire then the original D800 is your best choice.
