Bob, get a shoebox and cut a hole in one end the same size as a hair dryer. Cut smaller holes (about 1/2 inch) in the other three sides and the top. Remove battery and lens from camera and open it up. Put in box and close. Insert drier and turn on air dry. Let it run for a day or two. I once saved anFG in this manner. It had fallen in a creek from my vest pocket. I saved the camera but not the lens.

I would guess that there need to be 15 to 18 of the smaller holes.

My 7200 went for a dip when a kayak guide dropped it in the water (inside my dry bag that wasn’t all the way closed). This was several years ago. I let it dry out and it’s been working ever since, although the filter never recovered.
Good luck. Our cameras are on the older side but I still love mine.

Verrrry bad idea :-(

Desicant is passive, not an active drying agent. DO NOT BAG IT !!!

My D7200 and I were caught in a rainstorm yesterday and now it refuses to turn on. Battery's good and I get a quick flash on the led screen when turned on and then nothing. I love the camera but am unsure of the economic utility of sending it to Nikon for a looksee. Having never sent a camera in for repair I have no idea what Nikon charges to gain an estimate. Soliciting thoughts as to how I should proceed.

Bob

Repair would be costly. I'd try drying it out first. You can do that for free. Be patient.

Well, gang, thanks again for all your comments. It's been in a bag of rice for 4 days and still refuses to function. It shows absolutely no signs of moisture inside. The top LCD screen lights up but there are no characters nor will the rear screen do anything but give me about a half-second of the hour glass and then go blank. I'm afraid it's curtains.

Put in a self service product repair at nikonusa.com. Lots of time they give you an estimate as to what it would cost to fix it.

I checked online with Nikon and they can't give me an estimate unless I send it to them directly. My feeling is that for a camera that may be worth $400, I'll be throwing good money at bad. But I appreciate your input. It'll probably be research time for a new or used camera.

Well perhaps it's time to upgrade. It's a good time to upgrade.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Great minds working in the same direction.

I agree. My local camera guy, would likely agree. Sadly, his website now states he's retired. Just last summer, he moved to near you. He did a free estimate on my R5 and lens that went swimming in Hell's Canyon some time ago. Needed the info for my insurance claim.

Swimming in Hell's Canyon? With a name like that, he should have stayed away.
