Copy and paste a story into Google and you will get your answer.

Stella Liebeck certainly has been given a bad rap based on spurious information. She was not driving at the time of the incident. She was a passenger in the car and had only put the coffee cup between her knees in order to add cream and sugar. The car was not moving. It was parked in the McDonald's parking lot. The McDonald’s operations manual at that time required the franchise to serve its coffee at a temperature of 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit which is scalding and can result in 3rd-degree burns in 3 to 7 seconds. She was severely burned and had to undergo skin grafts as a result of her injury. McDonald's knew about the risk of burns due to the temperature of the coffee 10 years before this incident and they had chosen not to deal with it. Stella had offered to settle the lawsuit for $20,000, an amount that would cover the cost of her medical treatment and loss of income while she was in treatment. McDonald's offered her $800 and not a penny more. So, maybe give Stella a break.
Stella Liebeck certainly has been given a bad rap ... (show quote)

Stella was fortunate that neither I nor someone else with a lick of common sense was on her jury. Then again, I'm not a coffee drinker (I prefer diet Mtn Dew as my caffeine delivery mechanism) but even I know that it's hot.

But the way courts and juries are today it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest!

Thanks for going to the trouble of investigating this which seems to be a rare talent on the internet. I guess the only thing I like about the people that are excited about spreading this BS is that at least they are wasting their time doing that instead of trying to scam others.

Thank you. FAR, FAR too much BS & mis/disinformation, & I consider it essential to verify as much as possible.

What happened to "I gotta be careful with the coffee, it's hot."

I suppose people just don't think or reason anymore.......

Just like all the warnings on microwave foods, "Contents may be HOT."
Ya think?????

The problem in this case was that the coffee was not just "Hot" it was scalding. Water from a Yellowstone hot springs is around 196 degrees not much higher than the coffee served at McDonalds at the time. Think about that. Of course, there are many instances of people suing and receiving huge settlements for frivolous lawsuits but Stella was not one of them. She did not deserve the ridicule that she received.

Have to disagree - anyone who holds hot coffee between their knees possess an intellect at best questionable. Anyone who does that while in a car is simply an idiot.

I didn't - but it was still amusing;) - so thank you for posting.

Even if not real, I could easily envisage them happening. All you have to do is go to WallyWorld at 10pm on a Friday night...

Thanks for the clarification on this story. I think it shows how disinformation can affect our perception of things. However, large corporations are much better off if they can avoid jury trials. People award outlandish amounts of money on the basis of sometimes dubious "facts". Lawyers know how to pick those kinds of jurors from what is likely a pretty questionable jury pool in the first place.

Are you saying that people who serve on juries are not smart enough to get out of jury duty????....

As a friend of mine told me, the easiest way to get out of jury duty is to tell the judge: "OK, your honor, send that guilty person in here!!!

Perhaps you are one of the lucky few who have never had a momentary lapse of judgment but I know many people who are quite intelligent and reasonable who have. It is part of the human condition. By the way, the jury in Stella's lawsuit did find her partially responsible for the accident. However, at the temperatures that McDonald's was serving their coffee, it was an accident waiting to happen. Why would the coffee need to be served at temperatures close to those found in Yellowstone Park thermal hot springs? It doesn't make sense to me and is particularly reprehensible given that McDonalds had known the danger a decade in advance.
