I will save the WabiSabi for my sushi. šŸ˜³šŸ¤£. Or is it a battery brand?

I hope your equating B&W photography with tattoos and torn jeans is not emblematic of your knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the visual arts!

I assumed he meant the digital era faddish version of BW as attention grabbing difference now that color is the default.

Maybe?......

Looks like a bird on a branch to me.

I would probably call it low key, although I usually see low key applied to black and white images.

If I wanted to put something out there as "wabi sabi" I'd probably start with something that I perceived as being a safe option. It would appear that ageing is a recurring theme with this subject so I would look for people or things that were growing old gracefully, or if not gracefully then at least with some kind of pleasing aesthetic.

The thing is, it occurs to me that we already have subjects like dilapidated sheds, candids of homeless people, interior shots of old-style tool sheds and the like, and they apparently don't need any kind of label other than a descriptive title. Apparently many of us have been practicing wabi sabi without realising it.

If anybody finds the concept of wabi sabi inspiring I'm pleased for them but I think some of them may be missing the point that wabi sabi is just another description for subjects that we're already familiar with and already make good use of.

Wasn't the Lone Ranger's buddy named "Chemo Sabi"?

No no, that is what Tonto, the Lone Ranger's buddy, called the Lone Ranger.

But it really means "White man". LOL. That is a JOKE. Please don't go political on this.

See yorkiebyte above for correct definition.

Legend had it that it meant "my good friend". But more recent research strongly suggests that it very likely meant "Mister Charlie". Its just invented verbiage, not from any known indiginous language. Or it could just as well mean "masked man", or "sweet cheeks".

I, too, have wondered about this wabi sabi thing. I have seen the photos, read the explanations, read the philosophicals here, and come to a decision. First, I still don't understand it. Second, I am not sure others do either. Third, I think it is a fleeting fad. Fourth, I shall ignore it henceforth. That's my take on the entire thing.

My reaction too, so far. ???

With regard to photography, what exactly is Wabi Sabi ? Is it a single image with a lot of negative space ? Is a Saki bottle on a black background Wabi Sabi or does it have to be on a white background ? It seems that a lot of us have been doing this kind of photography/post processing for a long time without ever giving it a name.

I'm not sure, but I think they had a few hits in the 60's.

[Now that I've shown my ignorance, I did look at the Wiki on it and have saved it.]

The concept of wabi sabi is so pervasive that it presents a target that would be difficult to miss. The tricky stuff starts when we set ourselves the objective of finding good examples. You use the word "compelling", to that I would add "evocative". So what we would be looking for are images that tell the story of wabi sabi in a compelling and evocative way.

Finding an image that evokes the idea of interconnectedness could be a tricky one. Perhaps we could look for something simpler. It seems to me that

impermanence + imperfection = deterioration

Finding images of deterioration that tell a story is probably more manageable. But that only hints at the vast array of possibilities.

PS - For anybody trying to find images that tell a story of interconnectedness, good luck to you - and keep us informed of your progress .

After reading your last sentence I thought of the universe and some of the James Webb images and quantum entanglement. personally I believe EVERYTHING is interconnected, but then again I am just a mucker !

That last bit seems tricky. If anyone has anything even close Id hope to see it :-)

Would you know if a Wabi Sabi image of interconnectedness also must still evoke impermanence ? Such a combo could be reeeeeally elusive. Or, perhaps its OK if impermanence is not included ???

Connectedness can be made visible but its the "inter-" part thaz really tough to show visually.
