I hear from many people how confusing it is to navigate the menu settings on Sony cameras. I have no interest or desire to use a camera that will give me a headache each time I try to use it.
Interesting, but why should I have any interest in what the people in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter, are buying. I have been more than happy with my Nikons, F Photomic, F3 and on up to the D500. Alas they are all SLRs and since I refuse to put a large dent in my retirement account and "upgrade" my stable of Nikon equipment to mirrorless I will have to be content with producing subpar images no matter how proficient I may become.

May I say you can have the most expensive camera and the best glass out there, but if you don't know what you are doing, or know how to use them, all is wasted.
You are right. I actually have seen that happen. I was on a cruise and someone on the cruise had the latest and greatest film camera ($$$$) and it was interesting to see him use it more as if it was a point and shoot than the very top of the line Canon. Some people will just buy what is the latest and most expensive just because they can.
But a lot of times one can get a sense of which cameras they should be looking at by looking at what people are buying. gwilliams6 list was basically all high level full frame cameras and Sony, Canon, and Nikon. My shown list had a little more diversity. Fuji did make both lists (not in the top five of either list) and the OM-1 made 8th on the one list. If we could have seen the top ten camera sales of the top ten camera stores, we might have seen 15 to 20 or more different cameras listed. Sort by format and features along with cost, it could help someone make a very intelligent and happy purchase.

It can be found in the second list plus Fuji moved up in that list. Again, as some have said, these are only two list from just two of the many Japanese camera stores. I still say it would have been more interesting to see more stores. I am still sure Sony would have been on top. Sony has to be one of the most popular electronics manufacturers in Japan and that will help push Sony's camera sales.
Since I use one brand of cameras I really don't care what brands are best sellers in another country, as long as the market is still there. It is good to see that some of my brand are in the top ten, which tells me they will most likely remain in business for some time to come.
I am not a photographer first, I use my cameras to record things that I want to look at in the future and remember them as they were. "In my minds eye", I can visualize my dog that I had to leave 82 years ago, when my family made a major move, but I would really like to have a photo.

Gerald is an accomplished Pro photographer... SO, naturally he is going to be biased toward the type of equipment he and his cohorts use. Nothing wrong with that, but WAY too much emphasis is on the latest and greatest while us middle of the road guys, myself included, attempt to use and master what we have and can afford... I myself am torn between expanding my Canon or Olympus kits as my next move. I love the color science and IQ of the Canons but I also LOVE everything about the Olympus system. Maybe I will just buy a new DAC for my audio system and wait for the iPhone 16... Nothing but changes and decisions...

One more list to add more "confusion". Again from 43rumors.com. This is from the Japanese BCN association for camera sales for 2023.
1.Sony ZV-E10
2.Sony A6400
3.Canon R50
4.Canon R10
5.Canon M2
6.Olympus E-P7
7.Nikon ZFc
8.Olympus E-PL10
9.Olympus E-M10IV
10.Sony A7IV
This one show even more diversity. There are three OM cameras and not one of them is the OM-1. A list is a list. I suspect that this list covers more of what the general public of Japan are buying. And, remember, that is Japan, not the USA or the world.

B R A V O!!! Love your response. My equipment isn't listed either and I do quite well with what I have.

Just like the other list, there are no “flagship” cameras on it. Yes, it’s consumers not pro-level cameras.
A silly thread. Don't give a toot who buys what nor how many.

It's like the grudge matches at the drag strip. "Run what 'ya brung." I just shoot the cameras I have and don't worry about it. I will not buy a new camera unless something breaks. At 73 and looking at eleven on the shelf.... not likely to be buying anything. The ones already here are plenty of fun.
I kinda think like you. I had a brief flirtation with a new camera, but the trade in people wanted 10 of mine for 1 of theirs. No There is no camera on earth that is worth 10 of mine, thank you. I'll keep and shoot what I have. Somebody just wanted to make a huge profit at my expense. In the end, they got nothing and I'm still happy.
One thing that Yodobashi is not representative of overall. Secondly if I would want the camera that I want doesn't sell well so I can expect price drop. When I pick a camera I don't care if others want it. If others don't want it it's the better as I can get good deal.

I shot Nikon and Canon for decades, and Sony has easier touch menus now, no sweat. Once you set up your custom buttons in a Sony you dont even have to go into the menu much at all, just a fact.
If you do your research you wouldn't rule out a camera until you have actually tried it.
Find a better reason for why you choose, or dont choose a camera system. Menus are not keeping folks from buying Sony and making it the #1 selling mirrorless brand in Japan, and the world. BCN and CIPA numbers show that.
FYI, after using Sony since 2017, I find Nikon and Canon menus confusing and hard to navigate now, LOL
Cheers and best to you.
