Imagine what it was like during the Civil War when Union troops fought up the mountainside to take the heights. The climb alone was daunting and then they were being shot at from above.

Yes, 40-50 miles up the mountain to the north is where Lookout Mt. ends as it overlooks Chattanooga... The famous " Battle above the clouds " occurred there as cannons on the top could not get the " angle " to ward off the attacker clamoring up the cliff face... Lots of Civil war history in the area... I love to go to Chickamauga and just wander around.
