Like you, I don't know how I would react in such a situation. It's often spontaneous. But as I am 65, in decent shape, I think back to a recent Clint Eastwood movie line where he is in the same situation at age 80. He grabs the guy and says "now get out of here before I have a heart attack trying to kill you". I can relate...

You did good. Very good, in fact. Glad you're around to tell the tale.

I am proud of you. Dream or no dream. you did what was right. I am sure that I would do the same thing ( when the adrenalin kicks in), we do what is necessary.
The man was apprently meen enough to do that to a woman but not willing to go after a man.
Good for you.

from this ex cop, i say great job. The only thing you should have done differently is call 911 first, so that the cops would be on the way if things went bad fast. This is a perfect example of why during the depression crime rates were low. People got involved and watched out for each other.

I did not have a cell phone, but my wife and I have one now (pay as you go) I use about 15 minutes a month. They way it went, I was out of my truck and in it. I appreciate your service to your community. I live in a small town and I have a nice rapport with our police. People outside our community do not care for the Rockton Police as the police will pull you over for speeding / not stopping completely / etc. I tell people I know, "just follow the law" and those that continue to complain, I tell them to "stay out of Rockton". I was arrested by our police dept. in 1996 for standing up to a mess of young people (15-21 years old). Another long story, but when the police came to my home they were apologizing and I told them I broke the law and you need to do your job. The end is that the community banded together and things got squared away. Law Enforcement can be a real thank-less job, but I applaud the men and women who try to be the best they can be.

Divine appointment it in my eyes. Thank you.

That is what I felt at the time and after it was over.
My wife was a little upset with me, so I had to call my son (Colorado Springs) and talk it out with him. Most of our women do not get it as they love us so much and do not want us hurt. I cleared the air by saying "what if that girl was Sofie? (Our daughter) She understood then.

Dear Rathyatra and Croce,
I do not understand why someone who is getting beat would then turn on their "protector" like you two. I guess the police see allot of this kind of behavior in domestic disturbances. You did the right thing but because these two women cried wolf, don't let that stop you from saving someone in the future.

Did you know that more Police Officers attending Domestic Disputes are attacked by the victim than the original assaulter ? Domestics are dangerous .

Buddy

Both professional LEOs and (properly trained) private security know, the first and most important goal is to defuse the situation. It appears that you handled the situation with intelligence and courage. You are to be commended for your actions. That being said, I would urge caution should the situation ever arise again. The victim can sometimes become a powerful antagonist in domestic situations. Always keep an eye on ALL involved parties and, should the situation become complicated, remember that backing off does NOT indicate cowardice in any way.

You should be proud of yourself - you managed to stay in control when your emotions would have been naturally high - you took the sensible approach and minimised the danger for both yourself and the victim - have a great holiday - you deserve it.

Tell you a little story:

I was in Liverpool City Centre, with my wife and daughter, some years ago and saw a guy punching and kicking a flag seller - I acted instinctively and rushed over and grabbed the guy and threw him against a roadside traffic barrier and jammed his legs so he could do no more damage.
I suddenly felt a sharp pain on the back of my head as I turned I saw it was the flag seller hitting me with her tray and shouting for me to mind my own business and to release the guy who had been hitting her.
I learned later that there are fake flag sellers who get the collecting materials from the respective charity and keep the money - they were probably arguing about the split or he desperately needed money to get a drink or drugs.
Makes you wonder whether you should get involved but if you have decent instincts you just seem to act instinctively with no sense of personal danger.
If more of us were minded to intervene maybe these scumbags would not find it so easy - knew I should have kept up my Karate lessons LOL!!!
You should be proud of yourself - you managed to s... (show quote)

Wish I had a dollar for every domestic assault victim that turned on us when we arrested the perp for the assault. I've seen them go as far as jumping on an officer's back while he was fighting with the assaulting party.

I had a partner who was stabbed in the back with scissors by the wife while we were arresting the husband for severly beating her. Thank God for bullet proof vests. He was not injured.
