I'm wondering if anyone has ever photographed the El Santuario de Chimayo pilgrimage in New Mexico. I plan on being there and am looking for places to shoot the pilgrimage. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Excellent question. I have always wanted to photograph the Pilgrimage myself. I think that the area is vast enough that you can shoot from numerous locations. While there, you will want to go to Abiquiu too. Looking forward to viewing your images. Iām envious. Good luck and have a great time.
I think you should scout it out on a weekend and maybe spend the night at a campsite or bnb, go out and get the lay of the land. Alternatively, you could also look at aerial maps online and do a virtual tour of the areas you want to visit. Expect to do a lot of walking as parking along the road may extend for miles.
Have you been there before? I know the area well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Thank you so much! I have not been there so I appreciate your willingness to answer questions. I'm sure I will have many!
When you go, keep in mind that the church itself is behind a wall and the area will be very crowded with pilgrims. Give yourself plenty of time to get there, find a place to park, and enjoy the spirituality of the Sanctuario which is amazing.

Be sure to visit the small room where they have the sacred earth.

It is a fabulous site for photography. I was first there in 2004 and have returned whenever I am in the area. Here are my favorite images.
I haven't lived in NM for 20 years and miss it. A lot. As soon as you cross the state line, the light changes. Stunning and mysterious. I see several New Mexicans are on this thread, so lean on them. But, you might consider looking at the Santa Fe New Mexican website. In the past, they covered the pilgrimage pretty well.
Buena suerte.
