Flash for Canon R-Series

I have a Canon R7, and am thinking about adding a flash. I've been looking at the Godox V860 IIIc and the Yongnuo 600 EX-RT II. I'd also consider a Canon flash, such as the EL-5, but they're a good deal pricier than third-party flashes. However, I'm finding a lot of confusing info and reviews on the web, and I would welcome member's experiences in using flash on the R-series Canons. Here's some of the contradictory info:

- Some users say they get an ERR70 with the Godox, others don't.
- One review of the Canon El-5 says the AD-E1 shoe adapter is necessary, others don't mention it.
- The AD-E1 adapter provides weatherproofing and the ability to mount other devices like microphones. However, one article said it was needed for "full functionality," and mentioned it was needed for in-camera controls like flash exposure compensation. I don't know if that's true.
- Yongnuo highly rated for function but poorly rated for durability.

So, do you have a flash that's fully functional on your Canon R series? Any insight on the other questions?

Thanks,

Dan

I can't speak for the EL series, I am successfully using an older 550EX on my R7. I made a point to look for the contacts on the R7 that are for the newer features of the EL series and it is there, under a protective lip. So one would think the adapter isn't required, but I'm not sure. Contact Canon or a reputable reseller for a definitive answer.

If it were me, I would email B&H. Tell them you want a flash for a R7. For me that would include a remote for the camera and two or three heads that all work together in sync. With B&H, if it does not work within their recommendations and your expectations, they will take it back.

A quick look on their website leads to the Godox V1 TTL Flash and XProC Flash Trigger for Canon. I'd probable get two of the flash heads.

I used my Canon 600ex on my Canon RP.
I did have to go into the software to turn on the option to use a flash.
Unlock mirrored camera, I had to turn on software to use a flash.

There is a bit of overlap with the change to RF cameras the first ones didn't have the multi function shoe that the R7 has.
The new microphone for RF doesn't need the adapter on the R7.
Third party flashes as has been suggested by others you should call B&H or other reputable store for compatibility questions.
I went ahead and bought the adapter anyway as it does seal the shoe off with non multifunction equipment.
I use the 580EX which works without the adapter on my R7. But some newer EF era flashes like the 580EX II for some reason require the adapter.
I strongly recommend that you make a call to get the correct answers rather than here on UHH as a community we do not have a definitive answer.

I have used the Godox TT685 with my Olympus EM1 II and think it works fine. I think the controls on the back of the flash are easy to use. I did watch a couple of You Tube videos that were very helpful. I set it up to be triggered off camera with an Olympus flash unit mounted on the hot shoe.

I don't use it a lot, so I am not sure about durability at this time.

I use a Godox 685c and two 660c flashes and an X2 trigger with my R10 with no issues. I know these are lower end flashes but as a hobbyist they meet my needs quite well.

I would look into the Westcott fj80 flash. I have observed this in use and it is a viable alternative to your choices. I have the fj400 strobes and can tell you that Westcott has superb customer service. I never had a problem with my strobes, but did pepper them with a lot of questions and every time they were very helpful. https://www.fjwestcott.com/products/fj80-se-m-universal-80ws-speedlight

I purchased and use the Canon EL-5 Speedlight with my R7. I am very pleased, especially with the battery life.
