D700 Hype

The D700 is hyped because of the quality and character of its images. No one here seems to understand that. If you find done in pretty good + condition at a fair price go for it. These bodies are more than just the MP numbers.

I had one and loved it before moving on to the D800.

However, there are a lot of D700 fans out there and I can't help but wonder if much of of this adulation is hype driven group-think or if this old camera is really worth buying in 2024. Has anyone "upgraded" to an older camera such as this? What's been your experience and which of the other options should I consider seriously?

I went through the same choices. Landed with a D610, an even older model LOL.

It was not a bad choice. I'm till running the D7200 & D610 today.

If I'd be going up from this two, it would be a D500 & a D850. Not interested in any of todays mirrorless. I feel they are overpriced, so not enough bang for the buck in my upinion.

I think I would look for a good D750 or D810. The D700 is a little long in the tooth. Just my thoughts.

It is not an upgrade, it is you moving to a Full Frame Camera. The D700 can still capable of producing excellent images. If your mainly going to shoot high frames per second wildlife in motion then you might need to look other places.

It is a good camera but I would not consider buying a D700 today. We all have our priorities and mine led me to buy a few years ago a D610, a camera with 24 Mp. with the features I need for my landscape photography. I bet the D610 will also do very well with portraits, architecture and street photography. Because I have not been an avid wildlife photographer I do not know if its AF will be good enough for it.

Of the cameras that have been mentioned here I am only familiar with the D750 that performs very well. Finally, as has already been mentioned, if you do not have full frame lenses it is going to be expensive to switch to full frame. Your D7100, another camera I am familiar with, is a good camera and with the right lenses for it you should do very well. I have the D7000 and I am still very happy with it.

Hi Robin,

I've also been tempted to purchase a D700 over the last couple of years. The one thing that stops me is knowing that Nikon no longer services the D700 which makes me wonder if it ever needed repair, I'd be up a creek!

Very interested in the responses you receive.

Regards,
Paul

I purchased some parts for the D810 out of Nikon's Ny location. Fellow on the phone told me Dec 23 was the last date for servicing the D810 also of that matters to the OP..

Get a D700. Built like a brick they are indestructible. They had a used one here at Dodd for $250. 12 mpx is plenty, low light is great, superb autofocus so sports is great, wildlife and landscapes are great. Nothing goes wrong with them, reliability and dependability are without peer. I have and use two of them and have had one fall, with me 4’ onto icy highway, no damage.
It all depends on your available $$$, a used D700 will allow you to get into good glass cheap. Get a 24-120 VR for $100 and for less than $500 you can do anything. Get a 50 f1.8 or some older manual focus glass, the D700 plays very well a 35mm f2 ai-s.
For comparison I have a D850. It’s a wonder horse. But every picture taken with it could have just as well been taken with a D700.
Mpx above 6 and low noise above iso 800 are all that’s needed today, everything else is extra. And unless you regularly print above 11x17 you will be fine. BTW, my D850 did Not survive a fall from 3’ onto a Runway apron during a shoot, I believe based on previous experience that my D700 would have.

I went in the other direction and went new mirrorless (Z6ii and Z7ii - coming from a D7200/3300), but I suspect your budget is more limited. Older cameras still have great IQ, but keep in mind ISO range is usually less (if you shoot under ISO 3200 not a biggie anyway), and noise handling perhaps not as great. Frame rates will be lower. With the recent trends towards mirrorless, there's a lot of DSLRs being "dumped" on ebay and other sites like KEH, so great deals are everywhere. One other consideration if going full frame is the lenses - are you using mostly DX or FX lenses?...DX lenses will crop on a FF camera and will offer LESS benefit than staying with the D7100, which is an excellent crop sensor model btw.

This thread is refreshing. So many times all the discussions only include the "latest and greatest". My cameras over the years have included some top of the line bodies.

When taking a walk around places like Bombay Hook NWR it is my D7200 that I carry. It is light with a 300mm and even lighter with a short micro. A great (seldom seen today) feature is the built in flash.

Somehow I do get by with less than a gazillion megapixels. The beauty with photography as a hobby is that there is something for everybody.

I have owned the D700, D 800 D810 and D850. Yes the D700 was an excellent performer, but for me the D 810 was better and the D850 even better.

I would suggest you get a used or new D850; if that is outside your budget, then maybe a used D810.

Robin, let me first say that I loved the trip my wife and I made to Ireland a few years ago. Luckily, right before Covid. Since that trip, I upgraded to a D750 and love it. All but the weight. Also, if you like wildlife photography, the shutter is noisy. Even in quiet mode. I have used it only once for that purpose, on a den of young foxes that had taken up residence on my property, and it did not phase them. Animals considered prey may be different.

I'm all about old cameras, but in Jan 2024, buy something used in the 20-24MP range and ride that DSLRoraur for 10+ years into the future. Don't go back a decade and buy something that old and wayyyyy overpriced vs the capability delivered today by a new item.

The D700 had a very nice sensor- one of the nicest of the time frame.
Where it fell down for us was focusing on anything that moves, especially in low light.
The D3s fixed that, and is also available fairly cheap now, but the best bargain is probably the D750 it is a more modern camera

I would say that sensors reached their current IQ capability around 10 years ago and are stuck in time. Can you really see any difference in IQ between a Nikon D750, D810 or D850 and their current mirrorless cameras? Probably not. There are many reasons to prefer the current mirrorless options, but IQ isn't one of them. If you can live with the noise of the mirror and adequate autofocus, and if you have some of the best F mount lenses, then I would say that the D750, D810 and D850 should be on your radar. You will get better bargains on the older two of these cameras. The D850 is still being sold new. The D780 is also being sold new, so you may not be able to get a bargain on one of those.
