Watching an e-bay sale of Nikon D850, seller says the only number on the camera and box is "910". Normally should be 6 or 7 digits with 1st number indicating country for sale, 3------ for USA model. I have tried to research and it was suggested they ran out of numbers for the D850. Any help on serial numbers. I don't want to buy a non-USA model.

Ever hear of a googolplex? It's impossible to run out of numbers. I'd move on if it were my decision.

Ask for a photo of the number on the camera.
It would be interesting to see a 3 digit serial number.

I would just move on.

There must be other D850 Nikon's for sale.

SB 910 is a Nikon Flash

Paradise Pirate, the only thing against a gray market camera or lens is that usually the US importer of those cameras and lenses will not honor a warranty which is supposed to be international. Such cameras and lenses are made in the same factory where so called genuine imports originate. Do you really believe each imported camera and lens is fully checked before they are delivered to the customer? My son works with a computer company and has bought gray market cameras for some of his customers. A couple of owners experienced problems and my son sent the cameras to the original importer here in this USA and they were serviced without issues. Yes, Nikon included.

I have used gray market lenses in the past and never an issue with them. I have refrained from buying gray market cameras although it is most unusual to return them for service. I am not saying or advising anyone to buy gray market but I bet many photographers out there are using gray market products and they do not know it. I believe B&H stopped selling gray market but when they did they were offering a one year warranty on what they sold. My original Nikon F of 1963 was bought by me in Spain. When I wanted the Apollo fast film advance Nikon denied me service and listen to this, I bought the camera from an authorized European dealer. A few years later they replaced my film winder with the new Apollo winder at a nominal fee. The camera is still working.

There are two problems here...the first is whether this is a gray market product or not. That carries its own set of problems, which are real and have been discussed here a number of times.

The second issue, to me, is actually more serious. The seller appears to be working to be intentionally opaque concerning the origin and status of the product. To me, this speaks either to the fundamental ignorance of the seller or the fundamental dishonesty of the seller, or both.

Far worse than being gray market, this camera could be stolen. In that case, if it were found and recovered, it could be taken from you without compensation. If stolen, it may also have been handled roughly and damaged.

You have been counseled to move on from this "opportunity." There is a pretty long list of reasons why that is very good advice.

Yep that's very SUS! USA models do begin with a "3" and sometimes even trail with a "US". When buying on ebay I look for a few key items - seller rating, number of transactions, and return policy. Seller rating 97% +, 99% if under several hundred. Return policy either 14 or 30 days. I usually stick to USA and Japanese sellers, although if buying from Japan not likely you will get a USA model! I mainly look at the Japanese sellers for lenses which are usually in great condition, even older models from 30 years ago.
