Curmudgeon, Thanks for your post. At first, I could not tell exactly what was occurring; then, I saw the legs of worker. I have watched those bold trimmers down in in Phoenix. They deserve 'hazardous duty" pay.

We "had" 7 of these 80-footers in our backyard at the time we purchased our home & would watch this scary trimming each year After 5yrs or so -- We eventually had them all cut down -- cut from the top down -- equally scary-looking

We had a bunch of the damn things. We discovered they had value and sold them. Company came in with a crane and a flat bed truck, dug them up and hauled them off to Las Vegas. No charge

We also tried to sell ours -- No takers all said 80+ feet was too much -- Glad to see them go!!
When I was a kid living in California, we had a row of about fifteen huge Eucalyptus trees in our yard. Must have been an orange grove at one time. We used to free climb them all the time. A lot taller than Palm trees. I look back on it now, and wonder that we all survived to adulthood!

When I was young I climbed anything that was climbable an some things that were not. As a kid it was mostly trees but there were what we called cliffs. Later it was bouldering and some relatively short rock face climb. Something happened as I aged, I am no longer happy on exposed heights

Growing up in south Florida, I spent many hours climbing various citrus and pecan trees. I learned at a very early age to stay out of avocado trees as they are extremely brittle. It is a real wake-up call to fall over 12 feet and walk away. You stand there stunned, with a sore butt and bruised ego in front of all of your friends.
Falling from anywhere near the top of one of those Eucalyptus trees, no one would be walking away. Wouldn't be any concern about ego, or anything else!!

Yep for most people, growing older includes gaining, through experience a sense of caution. Not all, but most!
