Had a LONG lunch with 2 old friends yesterday. This morning got a call that the one directly across from me, maybe 2-3 feet away was hospitalized with Covid. Not looking forward to the coming week - no clue how I’m going to miss this one.

Hoping for the best, Chris!

A virus is so small that it is measured in nanometers. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter which can be expressed in scientific notation as 1×10−9 m, and as 1/1000000000 meter or 1/1000th of a millimeter. The COVID-19 virus particle is around 0.1 microns in size which can be arrested with a well-fitted N95 mask.

Don't confuse him with facts and details.

I always had to laugh at folks driving, alone in their vehicle, wearing a mask.

Thanks. Not looking forward to it (I have had the latest booster), but more worried about my friend, who has a bad heart condition.

I see them still and when I commented about it, a friend said, I don't shop much do I. Apparently driving short distances to help keep the consumer end of the economy chugging along gets time delayed if you are putting on and removing said mask at each of stop.
During the summer and early fall there was another very valid reason here in the west. The forest fires' smoke and in those hazy conditions they did help for sure.

Why bring up airborne contaminants in vapor form? Adds nothing to the discussion. I agree that proper use and fitting of masks is very important. But improper use by some does not invalidate the mask-wearing benefits to those that do handle them properly.

Do you wear a mask when doing large wood sanding projects?

Yes ANY dark colored wood will require a mask. Redwood, mahogany, teak, purple heartwood, walnut all require a mask to keep the dust out of your lungs. Cancer is worse than covid.

It’s not just a COPD risk. The dust from many exotics such as rosewood can cause anaphylactic shock, which can be deadly. It’s not the big particles so much, it’s the very fine dust that your dust collector may not stop.

Be sure they fit well, if air escapes around it they will not protect
We are talking about N95 not surgical or cloth, like everything protection not absolute but helps
Swiss cheese hypothesis

The local hospital had 26 Covid cases at the beginning of December. Within two weeks, it had 41 cases. A nearby hospital has 80 Covid patients. These are all people who are so sick that they need hospitalization, and it does not include the stay-at-home people who have Covid.

I've always heard that those blue masks were not effective for Covid, and I believe it. Just out of curiosity, I used one for sawing wood and spray painting, and they're worthless even for that.

If you don't believe that Covid is real, you don't have to post that here. Maybe we can keep this out of The Attic.

Don't have any figures locally but I am hearing about friends and family with COVID.

The wife and I are older (she mid 70s and I late 70s) and have multiple medical problems so in the initial COVID we pretty-much stayed home... now again being careful... but in a few days we ARE going to take a 800+ mile, 1 way, road trip to visit grandchildren... here's hoping/praying we avoid COVID/FLU/RSV.

What I have heard around here is FLU is hospitalizing more people that COVID lately... and we have taken FLU and RSV vaccines. We took the COVID vaccines (2) when they came out but our Dr. advised us to NOT take the latest booster.

Curious why the doctor advised you against the latest booster. Did he/she give a reason?

Check with Infectious Disease Specialist about whether to take or not latest booster.
Unless serious reaction with previous cannot imagine why that advice but not in that specialty

Yes... several of their patients, especially older ones, with side effects from the vaccine worse than the patients with COVID

I didnt bring it up. I was responding to a question about did I wear masks when doing projects with contaminemts and no I dont I wear a respirator.

No to the mask when sanding. My 24 inch sander has a vaccuum attached to it that does a pretty good job.

As for wearing .asks properly look at the data. They do not work and never have. A virus is much smaller than sawdust and if you wear a mask sanding you still get some dust inside it.

All you have to do to show that masks dont work is wear one outide when it is really cold and you can see your breath go right through it.
