At my town job I’ve learned to say some things twice or three times in letters and emails. I start out with something like, “No, we cannot provide financial assistance” and finish up with the same thing. Too many times of telling them no and they come back later, “But John said yes”.

Or explaining step by step the procedure they must follow and then end with, “Do NOT begin construction until you sign the contract which states down to the last penny…”

I’d say many of you don’t understand because you have never dealt with the public, particularly with financial matters. I have for years and have learned that you ALWAYS repeat the important parts. Just wait until someone strolls in with $25,000 worth of construction bills and you tell them they are out of luck because they didn’t follow procedures. And they say, “But you said.” No I didn’t.

When it comes to money, you repeat, repeat, repeat. If you don’t believe me, get a job dealing with public funds.

It is obvious few of you have worked in a support capacity anywhere.
Over the last 40 odd years dealing with many support groups and many manufacturers around the world I have formed many opinions of dealing with Americans -
1. Never ever send them a list of more than 2 items to deal with at the same time. They will only ever look at the first one and if you are lucky maybe the second. All the rest will be ignored. This has been emphasized by this thread.
2. Never ever NOT put your points in any other form than a list because it will be ignored.
3. If you have more than one point or item send it as a separate email preferably at least a week apart.
It amazes me how your military functions (all branches) since Americans seem to have an inability to read past the first 2 lines.
Now these observations have been formulated over 40 years, not just after this thread. Not all Americans have this inability because some are exceptional at dealing with issues. But if I had to put a figure on it I would say that perhaps 50-80% are bad. This thread has confirmed my observations since many of you actually know you are bad and are quite happy to state it. Basically God help America because you certainly need it.
