Sounds like a politician, a lawyer, an 'expert', a cop or anything like it. Worse, you might simply be a pretender.

Sorry, but in a forum like this one (and most other forums) no one cares where you are 'coming from'.

That said, your rant is moot as there is an AI section. Folks can use it (or not), that is their prerogative, their choice, not yours.

You do not like their choice of section when posting? It is YOUR issue, no one else's.

Dear Rongnongno...

I never said anything that vocalized my support for, or non-support for an AI Section...

Please reread my first post...
It said: "AI is, at BEST, 'Digital ART' creation while using a photograph as part of the medium."

We are in agreement there.

When I first got into online forums I entered a few contests (challenges). The only one I came close to placing was one about 'my worst photo ever'. Many of the 'contests' were taken over by groups of people who had several entries and would vote for each other. I thought that by entering contests I might learn something about my photos, but that never happened. There was no feedback given (although the contests made it possible) so it was just thumbs up or down. Mostly down.

I'd call it "AI image creation" if the final product is not a heavily modified photo taken by somebody.

If it is telling an AI program to create an "image of kittens hanging on the wings of the Wright Brothers first aircraft flying over Lake Huron" is basically a smart version of one of those carnival amusements where you squirt paint onto a spinning piece of cardboard to create "art." Or maybe clipping out bits of magazine images and making a whole new scene. Of course, that is done by humans.

An AI doctored up genuine photo is basically an extension of using polycontrast filters and dodging & burning.

Dear Dirt...

Yes..... Some think 'photo contests' is going to help improve what they do, and that they will get feedback... WRONG!!!

Unless 'required' as a condition of the judging, my 77 years of living and 55+ years in photography (some as a photo judge) will NOT take the time to do that...

In closing, after doing it for years, and years... and working alongside of many other professionals, I already know what I can achieve... and, I am 'self-guided' enough to recognize if/and when an image is good, better, or best... or need to be improved.

Tks for your response...

Cheers
George...

With experience and skill, AI can be made to conform to the user's wishes and can be made to produce something that comes close to the user's desired result. Alternatively you can still get an output from a minimal input prompt, in which case the output is determined predominantly by the AI. The implication is that AI has a level of autonomy that exceeds what we're used to. It's up to us, the users, to avoid the mistake of letting that autonomy make us lazy. The skill lies in learning how to make AI give us the results that we want, in the same way that we have to learn how to get cameras and PP to give us the results that we want. In many ways AI involves building on our already existing skills base.

There is a lot of grey area here. AI is a tool that is use to more effectively retouch images. For example a person can use Photoshop's AI to make a selection. Does that have to go into the AI section? What if the photographer removes something from the frame using AI or adds something? Or changes an expression? Where do you draw the line. How do you know what was AI and what was human? And how do you assure the image you're seeing did not have any AI.

And if a computer generates a beautiful image that people like, that's still a beautiful image no?

The capability of AI is truly amazing and what happens when AI figures out that humans are a problem? I fear the rise of the machines may soon be upon us.

It occurs to me that there are two things in play here. When I think about AI in photography I am thinking about adjuvants to editing programs such as Topaz Sharpen AI and DeNoise. I am not thinking about generation of images out of nothing but text description.

I use Topaz on my images when needed and feel no shame in the result. I have used generative AI once to correct a photo error. My wife's daughter had a kid recently and took a photo that I wanted to transmogrify to have him riding a snowboard. The only problem was that a photo of the kid that she took with her phone cut off the fingers of one hand so I used Generative AI to put fingers back. Things like that I have no problem with. I don't want to generate complete images from words, but I can't really say they are any worse than a painter generating a painting without a model.

I'm not that familiar with the mechanics of AI but the image-from-text stuff is probably a lot of images loaded into a database and the elements are put together after some sort of averaging. There is some random selection going on also since you can get different images by applying the same text at different times. That is sort of like my fruitcake recipe. I actually like fruitcake but not the citron that goes into a lot of it. So I wanted to make my own fruitcake. My mother used to make it but I didn't have her recipe. So I just looked up several recipes and averaged the elements that form the binding cake and just used the fruit I like.

Fully Agree GHS...

AI is, at BEST, 'Digital ART' creation while using a photograph as part of the medium.

QUESTION: In today's world, software 'manipulation' of images doesn't in most 'all instances' to some degree... At What point does it stop being 'Photography' and being 'Digital ART'?

There are the 'purists' who will argue that Ansel Adams did this.... so

Now, that is the true question for debate... I truly would like to know the answer...

How about the question "How desirable is artistry in photography?" Artistry isn't an essential part of photography - anybody taking photographs can claim to be practicing photography, so to clarify, a secondary question would be "What would photography be if it was devoid of all artistry?"

OK here I go again. Assume I took a photograph of a Roman Centurion at a Fair. I really like this photograph and would like to use it in a composite image of life in ancient Rome.

Problem: I need a photograph of Ancient Rome in 10 BC but of course there are none.

Solution: Create, in AI, an image of a street scene of Rome in 10 BC.

Put together my composite using a photograph and an image to create a picture.

Label the picture AI WARNING and post. But where do I post it? As long as I include the warning label, where ever I want.
