What is the best software to use to back up my computer? Some have recommended Backblaze. What does this community think? Thanks for your recommendations.

Dear Cheetah...

Some UHH members here have 'reminding' readers the Apple's 'Time Machine' and...
... I would like to make viewers here aware that there is also a Microsoft's 'Built-in' version of 'Backup'
..... Which can be found in the "Update & Security" section, of the Microsoft "Settings" menu
...... The nice part about this is... It is part of the Windows O.S., It is Free, and it can be scheduled...

NOW, of course, any good backup system should adhere to the "3,2,1 Principal which is a 'total of 3 back up, with one being the original, and 2 copies (1 the Original), and 1 copy should be off-site... i.e. "3,2,1"

As for me, I do go a little further, in that I have my first copy onto "intervals drives and/or USB drives", then I have another copy over and onto my QNAP TS-451+ NAS, and then all of this is backed up to "BackBlaze" which right now cost me only $ 7/month for backing up some 14 TB...... Cheap insurance...

Regarding the actual 'Free' M.S. Bulitin Backup System, I would invite you to view the YouTube video:
... TITLE: "How To Backup Windows 10 & 11 For Free!!" --- Which is at the below URL

Hope that helps you or anyone else...
.... Let me know

I use a BackBlaze service to automatically back up my C: and D: drives once a day. It backs up almost 3Tb of all my data. So far everything works fine, I didn't need restoration. It took a couple of days to do the initial backup and now it takes about 20 minutes daily to update.

MAC backup software. Backs up the entire system the first time.

Luke, it looks to me as if it only backs up the Mac HD, not the other desktop drives one might use. Is that correct?

I use to use backup program that was included with Microsoft windows, I also used Acronis and liked it until they got stupid. I found that the later versions slowed down my programs. Plenty of threads around on that. I tried a few others. The biggest problem with all of them is the size of the backup. I now have Active backup for business that runs on a Synology server. This has simplified my life quite a bit. I just backup everything. The cost of that is very cheap. The de-duplication they use works great. It has also saved me a few times when a needed a specific file version. It is basically set it up and forget it. A complete backup every day is what I use. Generally it is performed at night. But in the few cases where the machine was turned off it starts up as soon as I log on and doesn't seem to cause a big load. Generally it is done in about 10 minutes. I tried backups to the cloud but my files are just to massive and connection too slow for that to work. However I have it on my TODO list to try Backblaze to backup my Synology server.

The Windows program may be free, but if you don't have enough One Drive space, buy more space?

I would have to research that. Or, you can go to their website and se
Nd a message. I only use it to backup my internal drive to external drive. I have backed up dual drives one at a time but never have it thought to try both at the same time.
If I find out anything different, I’ll let you know.

I use NTI Backup Now Pro7 to automatically back up every evening. That backup drive is also in our house.

Then monthly I collect my second backup drive from a friend's house and update that backup using a Windows Batch File in Notepad as follows xcopy C:\Users\User\"Documents"\*.* F:\"My Docs Back-up"/d/v/s/e/y

A very simple but effective method. I don't trust having all my personal files and photos in the Cloud. However, having the second backup away from our property covers me re both theft and, heaven forbid, fire.

Just general info for Mac users...With Time Machine, you can have two or three or more backup drives. Time Machine simply cycles through them in order so you have redundancy. If you use three such drives, for instance, no backup will be older than 3 hours in the past.

A cloud backup for photo is difficult just because of the volume. Full frame raw files are usually 60-70 Mb each, results after editing (psd or tiff) could be much more. So, a daily cloud backup will take very long time. And restoring a few TB from a cloud will take forever. The only feasible solution I found is a NAS with RAID (e.g. Synology). If you are really afraid to lose you pictures you can use 2 different volumes.

Works well with USB external drives.

Thanks, that's good to know!

(For now I'll just stick with my batch file though.)

On MAC I use TimeMachine to two drives. On Windows I use the feature it provides to an external drive. On both I use iDrive which does both local and network volumes defined to the folder level. Runs on my nightly schedules. IDrive allows either local or cloud so I use cloud. It also allows high level encryption using my own key. Other products are also good, of course.
