Happy New Year hogs, so going into the new year I thought it would be a good idea to install the latest update firmware for my R5. I have done this several times before and it was seamless. I downloaded from the Canon Usa sight the latest ver. 19. I followed the pdf directions that came with the new ver. I have always used the #3 utility and a hard wire from Mac laptop to camera. A text on the camera says that I have to delete the old version before installing the new version I have never been asked to do the before? I usually just install no problem but I keep getting a message that the install did not take? So do I need to buy a writer reader CF express for 70 bucks so I can delete the old version and then put in the new version? Is there a way I can just delete the old version on the card while still in the camera? And yes, I have followed the instruction till I'm blue in the face.
Something is amiss. Firmware is the 'operating system' of the camera. You can't "delete" the OS of a camera, similar to how your computer would no longer operate if you "deleted" the OS. Don't delete anything until you better understand what the instructions are trying to do.
I just updated my R5 to 1.90 from 1.8.1 via an SDHC card with no issues, and no text on the camera to delete the old firmware version...

I guess OP has the problem because he used a CF express card that has the old firmware in it and he uses the camera connected to the computer to put the new firmware on the CF Express card in the camera and not use a card reader.
But I never had the problem before going from Mac to card in camera

Is the old firmware file on the same card as the new file too? That might be what needs to be deleted?

Try formatting the card in camera then download the update to the card again!
Why don't you simply reformat the card? The instructions for my R3 say to do that.

That’s what it sounds like to me. I’m not a Canon shooter but wouldn’t formatting the card delete that file?

In absence of better details from the OP, that's my guess.
Hogs, Thanks of your help I'm leaning towards re-formmating the card then put the the updated 1.9 . I have talk to a lot of people and have gotten some great advise and of course getting a hold of someone at canon would be nice.
I need to update my firmware on a recently purchased R5. Does it matter if I use the CF Express card vs the SD card. (sorry, new at this. I am coming from Sony where updates are done wirelessly.)

Nope, doesn't matter. But I would only have 1 card in the camera, not both CF & SDHC. And the FIR file needs to be in the root directory of the card. I use SDHC since my computer has a built in SDHC slot and don't have to attach the CF reader (and it gives me a reason to still have SDHC cards)...

Thank you, Glenn. I appreciate the advice. Looking forward to the R5.
