"astronaunt": a contraction meaning "astronomer's aunt".

Sorry...

Surrounding many news and social media pages are 100% garbage ads from China. Beyond silly "click bait" articles you must scroll though endlessly, these are deceptive ads outside the control of the FTC.

One is for a very poor quality heater that is so small it plugs directly into a wall socket...not cord. Walmart had them for around $15, but in these ads the hype (lies) are astounding! So are the prices.

" Elon Musk Reveals the Secret to Heating Your Home This Fall And Winter... All While Cutting Your Heating Bill to Basically $0.

Fall 2023 Special - “This hyper-efficient heating technology is how we kept astronaunts warm on trips to the International Space Station. Last December the tech was finally declassified, so we knew we could help millions of people stay warm during the current energy crisis heading into winter.” [Note they couldn't spell astronauts!]
I will NEVER buy anything advertised on Facebook again. Bought a couple of items and when they arrived, they looked NOTHING like the pics. They were cheap imitations. I was able to get my money back on one, but not the other. You return stuff to a warehouse in Houston and that's the last you see of it. Zuckerberg belongs in PRISON for the scams he allows on FB.

The faked photo was obvious.

Other ads offer $399 coats from [add famous name here] for $39.95. Buyers report never getting the product and the website vanishing, only to reappear with a new URL weeks later.

These appear on all kinds of pages, so be careful not to get taken.

Your a genius to see through the silly over hyped ad copy. Thank you for warning the less astute.

I just like observing the idiocy going on around me. This is how radio folks got their material.

I know that many people depend on their `15 Amp or 20 Amp circuit breakers but from my experience that they don't always work reliably. During my Firefighter days we had a house (actually a mobil) that burned. The fire investigator calculated that a 15 A circuit actually had 25-30 amps being drawn and everything seemed to be wired correctly, yet the breaker did not trip for unknown reasons and the wire actually got so hot it melted. Be aware of what you are drawing.

Those small, electric heaters (the good quality, metal ones with thermostats and tip over cut offs) or infrared heaters are NOT inexpensive to run. 1500 watts for 24 hours is 36 KWH, and here in NC, which has fairly reasonable electric rates that average 11-12 cents/kwh, that’s at least $4.00/day. If you’re on TOU metering, it may be less, but it adds to the peak load component of your bill. Electrical resistance heating isn’t an efficient way to heat a house.

Same with power strips! Fires have been caused by them also.

I think most of the houses in Florida use toaster strips to heat the house.
Boy, you should see the electric meter disk spin!

Well, electric heat pumps are way more efficient than resistance heating and the new ones will work down to fairly low temperatures before they energize the resistance emergency heating. Here in NC, with my supplier, natural gas prices have been rising about 20% year over year for the last few years (I got a $400 gas bill last month that wasn’t that cold with a high effeciency gas furnace) so I’m considering investing in a hybrid gas/heat pump. It uses the heat pump down to a specific temp and switches to gas where a conventional pump would switch to resistance heating. Hopefully we can use the same evaporator and piping and just change the outside unit - we’ll see. Natural gas used to be a bargain compared to electric for hot water and dryer, but not any more.

I think your point is that for this “electric future” to become reality, we’re gonna need way more “ clean” generating capacity (nuclear) and an upgraded distribution system before the mass adoption of EVs is going to be feasible (if at all)

Just guess where most electric car batteries are made........
Three guesses, the first two don't count.

They’re just reopening a big Lithium mine here in NC that has been closed for 20-30 years, but we need a better battery technology than LiPo.

There’s a lot of strange and irrational thinking and political rhetoric about energy.

Like trying to get everyone to buy a car that they can't afford to replace the battery if need be?
Let alone affording the car itself.

I don’t think that’s the motivation, but a discussion of climate change will likely end up in the attic, and I’ve already had one topic moved there by admin last week.
