There's a good question on the main photo section right now. "Can I use Nikon D500 lenses on a Nikon Z8?" There have been over 40 responses and over 1000 views. Hopefully the question was answered in the first FIVE answers, but it certainly could have been answered by pulling up the specs to each camera on the Nikon site. But, obviously, the question received answers. Going back to 2011, the main photo section was open to all questions, no matter how simple.

The one skill I'm most thankful for learning in school was how to be resourceful and do diligent research. That used to be in a library. Now, the Internet is my library.

Yes, every manufacturer worthy of support will have a web site with a Downloads or Support section where they keep manuals and other pertinent information.

Unfortunately, you do have to learn J-English (Japanese rather poorly translated to English) to understand some of it.

When I wrote my company's special bulletins for our independent reseller customers, we did a survey to find out who our readers were, and weren't, among our sales force.

We put a statement on Page One of our newsletter one month in the early 1980s that said, "Call 704-845-xxxx and ask for [sales secretary]. Tell her you read this, and you want your ten dollar bill." We did this a couple of times with similar results.

We learned that about 22% of people we sent information to would read it, call her, and have her send them ten bucks! MOST of those independent reps were in the top 20 highest dollar volume sales category. They didn’t NEED the ten bucks, but they asked for it!

When I was ten, my late uncle, a pharmacist who interested me in photography at age five, told me, "Successful people READ. If you want to learn photography, read everything you can find about it."

I learned in college that the top 1% of performers read everything in their fields they can get their hands on. They devour the latest information and put it to good use.

There is very little you cannot learn to do if you read and watch before trying.

Sometimes I see a lot of meanness on this site. People without understanding the economies of other members, throw out recommendations about buying like they are the ultimate authority on a subject, or right out boast like they think others are stupid for not buying the best on the market. Some people skimp whenever they can due to their financial situation. Obviously, you can't buy a generic Nikon, Canon, Sony, or Olympus body so while someone may have funds for that, they may need to skimp elsewhere. Someone in another post actually said they would not buy a non-OEM battery because it might be made in a foreign country! Guess what -- your OEM batteries are made in a foreign country! Other answers berate members for buying 3rd party items like battery grips. Hey, maybe they don't need the grip that can fall off a 100 ft. cliff and survive, maybe they just like a grip that affords a better hold when using the camera in a vertical orientation. Someone else said they would only buy HP cartridges -- I have an answer for that -- professional equipment like printers using eight or more cartridges notwithstanding, if you own a printer that you paid a couple of hundred dollars for, you didn't buy a printer, you bought into a very expensive ink program. Those lower-priced printers are so cheap because when you buy one, HP, Canon, or any others the manufacturer has you by the balls! You will be paying through the nose for your ink. Epson, and now Canon and HP have printers that use tanks which are easy to fill and cost a fraction of what cartridges do. Another possibility is that when it comes to batteries who knows who makes them? There may only be two plants in Japan/China/Taiwan that make all of them and just put different names on them. Look at the round head flash from Neewer, Bolt, and Godox they are all the same unit, just a name change. When someone asks for advice, it would be nice to see people respond with their recommendations and not put others down for things like not using OEM equipment. I would bet 75% of people here who act like people are stupid for not spending the extra bucks for a Nikon/Canon/Sony battery, use a flash that is not OEM. I work part-time at Sam's Club and I've had people tell me they would only buy Everyready Batteries over the store brand. Guess what -- they are the same battery! They don't understand marketing -- they can't believe Everyready would sell us batteries that would undercut the name brand. I explain that most big retailers will have an inhouse brand and Eveyready knows if they don't sell us a generic, someone else would! This way they get all the business. Ever see two gas stations owned by the same company across the street from each other -- it's about limiting competition. While I understand some of the group has the money to buy top-drawer on all their equipment, I think putting others down (and that is what you are doing when you state I would only buy xxx) is insensitive and is an opinion you should keep to yourselves. When I was 15, I worked in a manufacturing jewelry shop. We sold Rolex watches both 14 kt. and gold plated. They looked identical so one day I asked Mr. Hays (the owner) why anyone would spend 1200 or more for a Rolex when they could have an identical watch in gold plate for a third of the price. I said no one would know the difference. Mr. Hays looked me in the eye and said, "Oh, but the owner would know". That has stuck with me for the last 58 years and I have tried to live life in a way so as not to flaunt what I have but to just respect my good fortune when something good comes my way. So UHHers, lighten up. Respect each other, give recommendations when asked, and don't come down on others for their choices. (If you are wondering about the cheap prices for Rolex Watches -- while I worked at the jewelry shop the US went off the gold standard. One day gold was 37.00 an ounce, the next day it was like 387.00 an ounce!)

I'm not knocking asking at UHH, it's just that the person may get a more expedient, definitive answer by Googling first.

And you know that in instances like what you referred to, the OP decided on page four (and probably left the discussion), and the remaining 20 pages are everyone repeating the same thing because they don't read the thread finding out that the problem/question was resolved.

Many times I wanted to say something, but held back. We’re retired and live on SS and Vet disability and can’t spend the big bucks on the best equipment and make do on ‘not so best’. Love taking photos and tweaking as best I can. So Some of us find other ways to save the $ and economize to get along. Thanks for bringing this up for those of us who don’t make the bucks.

Thank you for your service!

Just keep in mind there are some (good) reasons why people recommend OEM equipments - they are mostly better/best ! !
Yes, I am a budget guy for many years - but I have both OEM and third party stuff - MOST third party stuff does not work as well ! So, that is what I recommend - but I do NOT care care what YOU buy ! ! 8-)

All brands of Alkaline batteries leak if drained rapidly or completely, or stored in devices with chips they keep active. Keep them bagged separately.

Not so! The ones I found leaked were in their original bubble pack. Not installed in any devices and yes they still have sufficient power left in them.

Is this one of the sections that says, "Supply critique only when requested?" You have more chance of having a long post read in its entirety if it's divided into logical thought, i.e. paragraphs. Sure, you can write it willy-nilly, thought-flow, any way you want, but that doesn't guarantee that it will be fully read.

Yes, I agree, but he didn't make paragraphs. But yet, that does not invalidate what he had to say. Also, The UHH interface is not a word processor, i.e., not MS-Word.

When I write something important in one of my initial posts here or in an email to a friend, I compose it in Word and proof read it and possibly wait more than a day before posting it. The UHH and Facebook are usually more spontaneous than that for most of us. If only UHH would allow corrections after one hours I'd be happier with a lot of what gets posted here.

I look at it this way. How many folks would buy a name-brand drug when there is an approved generic version available at a fraction of the price?

Generic drug makers invest nothing in R&D so they can manufacture by producing the drugs that somebody else spent millions to develop, test and get approved. A generic producer will not develop the drug that cures cancer or other dreaded disease. Your insurance company makes the decision in the accounting office because they care about the bottom line not funding life saving research.

It is hard to read a huge text block with no paragraphs. But the person who pointed that out did it in a very mean way. If it were presented as a helpful tip to make his writing easer to read that would be different.

Did the writer not learn about paragraphs in elementary school? and...Rolex has never made gold-plated anything.

When you put it that way, it is an insult. It can be easily pointed out in a nice way that using paragraphs makes it easier to read.

Maybe the same people who only buy OEM replacement stuff for their cars?

I’m one of those people. Been wrenching for >60 years, and I learned early on the pain of having to do the job twice because the aftermarket part failed.

They are going to leak, no matter what. I've had them go bad in a package, too, stored in a hot closet. I don't store them there any more.

They have expansion seals that allow them to leak if pressure builds up in the cells for any reason, heat being the most common reason. I left a flashlight on overnight during a power failure. The batteries leaked in it. My son left AA Alkalines in my wireless mic system after a day of video recording. The batteries leaked in the receiver and transmitter. THOSE were fun to clean out...

I keep a bottle of white vinegar, Q-tips, and DeOxIt spray around, just so I can clean out battery compartments (if the batteries don't swell and ruin the device completely). Vinegar will remove the crystalized electrolyte, distilled water will remove the vinegar, and DeOxIt will remove oxidation from terminals and coat them with a light electrically non-insulating lubricant.
