What would be the downsides of using non-Canon batteries in my R10? Example below. Not as reliable as Canon batteries? They're SO much cheaper, and the reviews are good. But I dunno. Thanks for any thoughts.

I don't know about the R10, but for mt T1i I have had 5 Watson, Lenmar, and another brand one OEM.
Been using them for years. They may not last as long as the OEM battery (I never checked as each outing the camera gets used differently), but at about $20-25 a battery..... for me it's more cost effective.
I understand that some of the newer cameras "read" the battery and will yell if it is not an OEM battery, poor form.

Thanks. Good to know. I'm probably just gonna go with a Canon for my spare battery. I see that battery life is not great in the R10, so I'll definitely want to have a spare with me at all times.

With older Canon cameras the battery brand was irrelevant.
I found out that my R7 has communication with the Canon battery and that is enough to go only with Canon.
Also buy 2 more Canon batteries and they should be good for about as long as you have the camera.
They are generally from looking have more power than off brands.
Amortize them and they are not expensive.
You have a complex expensive camera, now is not the time to go cheap on batteries.

I have been using third party batteries for years in several models of EF and RF bodies. Mostly Wasabi.

They work just fine. Even if some don't last as many shots or as many years, they are so cheap that for the price of one Canon branded battery you can have multiple batteries whose total shots and years of service come out to more than the Canon batteries.

I can put extra batteries with each body instead of swapping them around as I change which body I am using.

I use Wasabi batteries in my Canon and Nikon cameras. They have worked well for me and they perform pretty much like the Canon and Nikon batteries. About a week ago I had one if my Wasabi batteries, that I use in my Canon SX50, died and won't take a charge any longer. I bought it, along with two others, in January or February 2014 so it has lasted just a little short of 10 years. My other Wasabi batteries are still working and charging fine. So at a cost of about 1/4 the price of the Canon batteries, they have been well worthwhile.

People talk about “non OEM” batteries. That way it’s not brand specific. Look that up, and you’ll get an earful.

I've used other brands since back when I first had an EOS XL and have never had a problem.

The one thing I have picked up on in all these discussions is, if you buy a third party battery, buy the same brand charger. Charge a Canon battery with a Canon charger. Charge a Wasabi battery with a Wasabi charger. The third party battery I bought when I forgot my Canon battery seems to be having problems after being charged in the Canon charger. A number of others have express the same thing.

Let the flogging begin!

Probably for the best results. Chargers are usually designed around the battery characteristics, which may vary between manufacturers.

I charge my “Pentax” and “Kastar” batteries in either a “Pentax” or a “Watson” charger, whichever is more convenient for me.

I have been using Powerextra batteries for several years and now use them in my R50 and have had no problems what so ever. So far they have lasted just as long as Canon's more expensive LP-E17 in the R50. So far the Powerextra batteries have works just fine, and have no doubts that they will keep on working as intended. Since I do have an original Canon LP-E17 that came with the R50, I will see how long they last compared to it before they fail and have to be replaced. I can tell you I have some Powerextra LP-E6N for my Canon 70D that were bought in 2020 and are still going strong.

I am sure there will be more then plenty of naysayers that will tell you to only use original Canon batteries.

The LP-E17 has never been a great battery for long life, no matter what it was used in.

I have been using Promaster Batteries in numerous Canon digital cameras starting with A Rebel XTi, T4i,70D,80D,
90D,and my curent cameras R7 and R5. I have never had any problems and performance wise they are equal to Canon batteries.
