I can think of three things right off the top of my head that Lightroom can't do: Composites, frequency separation and precise selections right down to a single pixel. I can think of others too.

Lightroom is a basic raw file developer. I have seen people (some right here) coming up with convoluted workarounds for tasks that are simple and basic in Photoshop. Lightroom has no layers or channels, the most basic parts of any photo editing program.

Many people will say that their photos are so good that they need only minor tweaks and Lightroom is all they need. They say that because they don't know how to use Photoshop and don't want to learn it.

There is a reason that Lightroom keeps getting more and new features that Photoshop has had for years: People want more than Lightroom can give them, but don't want to make the effort to learn Photoshop

Last I checked, you rent Lightroom in a few versions along with Photoshop. Adobe calls it their "Ecosystem". For $10 a month you get it all. If one does not do "Composites, frequency separation and precise selections" you carry you image file to the other.

You don't tell us much about the problems you're having but my guess is it's the Library module and cataloguing that are your stumbling block. As others have said, the basic editing in Lr couldn't be much simpler. To that I would add that the Adjustments brush is the easiest that I've ever tried and the clone tool, while not being perfect, is one of the more usable that I've tried.

The Library presents the user with a learning curve and it doesn't help that it's not identical to the Windows workflow for working with files. if you find videos to help with your understanding of the Library module and cataloguing you'll find that the rest is about as simple as it gets. The best editing workflow In Lr is just to use the tools in the order that they come in (when needed). In Lr the simple stuff is simple and the complicated stuff is complicated. No editor can do the impossible but you don't want one that makes the simple stuff complicated.

I've never used Lightroom. I've never used Photoshop. I do use Affinity. I do use PhotoFiltre. I have wondered what on earth LR and PS can do for me that my choice of editors cannot - A choice that has, over time, saved me the price of a good camera.
Wishing all Uglies a Happy Shooting New Year.

I have been using Adobe Lightroom. It is effective but it has a steep learning curve. Are you using one that still allows control over the various aspects of the picture but is easier to use?

The Adobe system is easy. If you run into an issue just ask on line, up will come video's on how to do it. Nothing is easier.
I use Photoshop with much success. There are many, many, many tutorials on line to help you learn at your own speed. If I can learn it, anyone can.

I remember my early experiences with LR were frustrating too. Perhaps you have a friend with experience that could get you started. Just a few Ah-ha moments will get you past your anxiety and you’ll be on your way to using the most popular and useful software for image management. You could also look at YouTube. There are thousands of very talented and generous photographers out there willing to help you.

Stick with it, you won’t regret it.

I use Elements. It has 3 editing modes - Quick, Guided, and Advanced - from totally automated edits to manual controls of all the features just like LR does. It’s Organizer uses the same database structure that LR uses but is much less confusing.

Good. I do own a Nikon, a Coolpix 1000. Do you mind sharing how you make a slideshow of your photos? I use a Mac Air pc to show them.

There is a Slideshow feature in NX Studio. You access it from the top toolbar. You can learn more about NX studio by accessing its User Guide or reference guide. Start here:

Well, I don't buy this either. It seems that maybe you're not a Lightroom user.

By the same token it seems that you are not au fait with most other editors!

This is true. LR and PS are all I use or have ever used.

Any program that allows for the use of layers and/or masking will let you to have selective control when applying adjustments. This includes programs like "Affinity Photo", "ON1 Photo RAW", "Photoshop Elements", "Corel Paint Shop Pro" and if you want free software, you have "Gimp". There are a number if others as well as the ones I mentioned.

I agree that most of Lightroom is not "a steep learning curve." It's just another program to learn and there is lots of help online. I would not call it "the epitome of amateur photo editing." It's not PS by any means but every version offers more options and I believe (without any proof) that a large majority of professional photography we see is mostly tuned up and adjusted in Lightroom.

It is all relative. Many people are only interested in much more basic software that is as easy to use as Picasa. For them more functionality may be overkill and the complexity of LightRoom will be a real challenge.

While all the choices you mention are potentially good alternatives to Lightroom, they are all at least as complex to use with an equally large learning curve which is exactly what the OP wanted to avoid.

Is there a particular aspect you’re having trouble learning? I know a lot have problems with the digital asset management part. I think it’s worthwhile to learn that and it’ll make life easier managing your photos. As for actual editing I think it’s pretty easy to learn the basic sliders. I’ve never used Adobe Bridge but I understand the ACR portion is just like the develop module in LR. If you’re already an Adobe subscriber it’s part of the deal.

That same photography could probably be tuned up just as well with any of dozens of phone apps.
