I presume I have to get a card reader that is specifically designed for a CF Express card? I have a reader for my XQD card in my D850, that reader was made by the same company that made the XQD card. I have a SanDisk CF Express card for my Z8, is it better to get a SanDisk reader too?

My experience: a reader is a reader.
I currently have two Energizer external readers that are solidly built. (Yes, the battery people.)
Readers just have to be compatible with the latest card technology.

Some XQD readers will work with CF Express B, but they have to be designed to do that. The reverse does work, CF Express B readers can handle the XQDs. No, you do not have to get a reader produced by the same company that made your card. Just do your research as to which reader is well regarded. I happen to use one made by Sony.

Correct, you will need a CFExpress reader for that card XQD readers are not forward compatible.

Not all CFExpress readers will read XQD cards. Look for a reader that specifies both.

Does it work? If it works keep using it.

I just experienced an incompatibility. My Sony XQD reader does not work with a CFE card. The CFE plugs in to the XQD reader just fine, mechanically fits, but the computer doesn’t recognize the card. So you you need to try it to find out.

As others have stated, you will need a CF Express card reader which is backwards compatible. You do not have to use a San Disk card reader with your San Disk CF Express card. I use a Transcend card reader that I purchased from B&H Photo, the RDE2, which works fine, no problems at all in the past year and a half. Links below to B&H and Amazon for the RDE2.

You don't need to buy a new reader. Simply connect your camera directly to the computer with the USB cable provided with the camera and then simply transfer the pictures to your computer. i am doing that with my Z8 and it works very well.

You will find the card reader is considerably faster and this matters if you are downloading a larger number of files.

I concur Jerry. Using the cable supplied with the camera is much slower than using a card reader, especially when you have a lot of photos to download even with a fast computer.

Can a CF Express card reader reads old plain CF cards? I don't find too many CF card reader for sale. I need a new one for my many devices that use CF card.

No...it is a completely different forn factor and interface. You might check Micro Center for a reader for the original CF cards.

Nope, completely different thing. Your best bet is to look for a multi card reader. They’ll often handle CF cards.
