I looked out of our kitchen window one-day last week, and in our small cul-de-sac there was a UPS/Fed-ex/ Amazon Prime and an unmarked white van making deliveries. A good proportion of cardboard in our recycling bin is from Amazon. If I ask my wife "What is coming this week" ...A typical answer might be " Just a couple of things from Mr Amazon".

Ain't online great? Oh, wait...it's really like sending production overseas, and Jeff gets richer and buys a football team. Then local businesses die. The local traidsman can't get work, the local hardwear store can't sell you a half pound of nails, the restraunt down the street you go to once a year closes, people go to the barber every 8 weeks instead of monthly (and his business drops by 50%)...yupp, ain't online shopping great?

I agree with you..but unfortunately online shopping is here to stay. No Bus fares/no fuel costs/no parking fees/no jostling in shopping centres/ no travelling time/and often cheaper. We get what we can from our small town shops, and then it's back to Jeff and his competitors online.

I get a kick out of questions on Amazon. "Where is this made?" Really? You don't know? Companies chose to fire Americans and hire Chinese. We don't make things here the way we used to. We exported our technology to China. China is able to manufacture products that we can no longer manufacturer. We don't have the know-how, technology, or equipment to manufacture high-tech products.

Even American cars are made with foreign-made components.

But why such a question isn't answered? Because the sellers don't know either. Not everything made in China.

I remember seeing a report from a few years ago where a family had a new home built for them. They had a caveat that everything had to built in the United States. They found out that this was not possible and that they had to buy a few items made in other countries, but not that many in the overall scheme of things. What they also found out was that the increase in the final cost of their home was negligible. I should have put the source of this story in my "things I don't want to forget" notebook, but, alas, did not.

Every time I've seen the question, the answer has been China.

It would be tough to find appliances and electronics made here. I can understand the final cost not being much greater. The savings from production in China don't go to the consumer. I wonder where they do go.

My appliances stoves, refrigerator, washer, dryer are all made in the USA. They are not expensive ones either.

In fact most of those are still made (or assembled) in the USA.

I almost always give my local stores, even the big chains, a shot before I resort to online. But 8 times out of 10 stores don't have my size, the color I want, or the item I'm looking for. They offer to order it for you. It'l be ready a week from Tuesday. I turn to the alternative.
