I will be in Lisbon, Sintra, Nazare, Porto and Algarve and deciding what to take. The choice is Canon SX50HS or Canon 70D with 24-105 4.0L, Canon 100-400L, Tokina 11-20 2.8 and Nifty Fifty.I know this is old gear but trying not to buy any new gear unless that would make a huge difference. Thanks in advance for Your knowledgeable suggestions.

Take the 70D, the 11-20 and the 24-105. You don't need the longer lens nor the 50m on that body. Have fun!

I agree. The 24-105mm is a great travel lens, but on an APS-C body it is not wide enough. The 11-20mm lens will get you the wider shots. The nifty fifty will be too long on an APS-C bodo to be useful; the same with the telephoto lens. Enjoy your trip!

Having taken many trips to Europe, I agree that the 11-20 and 24-105 are more than sufficient. I think your 24-105 will carry most of the load.

Have a great trip.

I’ve been there five times and I agree the 24-105 f4 and 11-20 f2.8 will work just fine.

I agree as well. Most of what I found to photograph were architectural and landscape motifs.

Was there in Sept, 10 days. Agree with this.
I used my D850 with a 21mm and my Sony RX100 24-200

To be frank, none of these would be my solutions of choices and here are the reasons why:
1-the point and shoot is more than 10 years old and may fail or at least be more restricted in tis possibilities (regarding dynamic range for instance which can be an issue in Portugal–white walls, sea, and sun, I have been to the places you are mentioning)
2-the Canon means bulky (and "visible") equipment that you may have to carry all the time. There are easier solutions but that would entail an investment.
Bottom line, without investing, I would go for the 70D and the 24-105 that will cover 98% or your needs.

IMO the 11-20 is most important.

To do what? Distort everything, especially portraits? Having to crop most your images??? Better off leaving it at home.

This would be true for a full-frame camera body. However, the 70D is a crop-sensor body. With the Canon crop factor of 1.6, the 24-105mm lens de facto does not open wider than 38mm. Therefore, I definitely would take the 11-20mm lens (full frame equivalent 18-32mm).

I do not think that the 17/18 mm equivalent of the 11 mm end of the zoom is very useful and the distorsions are even worse because it is a zoom (compared to a prime) the 32 mm equivalent in the other direction is fare more usable, agreed, but still with distorsion issues. Now 38 mm - 168 mm (24-105 mm) makes that a better all-around lens for me: 38 is perfect for street and landscape, 168 mm is perfect for portraits and details. But to everyone their own subjects and the way they want to photograph them. I would definitely travel light and leave the 11-20 at home. [or just take a 35 mm (23 mm APS-C) which I often do ;o)]
