Hope it works soon… I am having trouble breathing!!!

Speaking of bags over your head (and this is totally related to this discussion), I saw a movie the other night where a killer suffocated his victim with a plastic bag. The victim was struggling violently, so much so that he did not hear me yelling "poke a hole in the bag with one of the ten fingers at your disposal". The silver lining is, in the end his tinnitus was cured.

I found my new hearing aids have a 'ringing' cancelling effect. As l write this l can verify l'm not hearing the ringing. Without the aids, its definately there., has been for decades.
Rexton Hearing aid is from the Costco Hearing Center $1600 for a pair, free any servicing as long as you have them.
This Jan 2023 was my second set. First set lasted me 10 years.

Cheers and Happy Holidays to ALL !

Well, that's good to know, if the need arises. I remember my grandmother having a hearing aid. It was like a Sony Walkman. They have certainly changed over the years.

According to my doctor and reading, the problem is that even if you lose your hearing, or cut the nerve, you still hear the ringing as the brain gets so use to it that it will generate the noise. I had the same problem with a visual stigmatism, test showed it gone, but new glasses without the correction were horrors. Brain learn to correct the correction apparently, I was told.

Omg! I was so excited when I saw this title. I have tinnitus and I have tried everything. Funny though.

There's a Tinnitus Treatment Device called Lenire, FDA approved. So new that its hard to get!! And there's a waitlist.

Sadly tinnitus has been connected to dementia. New data is coming out supporting that statement. I had the article but I forgot where i put it. The ringing distracted me.

Wow! Thanks for sharing that!
Now I have the answer for that "What's wrong with you, anyway?!?!" question I've had hurled at me my whole life.

Based on this, I now realize dementia fully set in, full-volume, when I was three years old.

Yes, I've read about it. There is a place close to me that it is available.

File under 2 cents: Tinnitus is the result of the hairs in the cochlea (cilia) corresponding to high frequencies becoming damaged with age and the cumulative wear and tear listening to loud sounds. When the cilia are damaged, they send a signal to the brain and we hear that frequency or group of frequencies. The connection to dementia or other macro brain function loss with aging, it is said to be that the brain is being overworked by the steady stimulation by the damaged cilia nerves with no benefit. Personally, I have noticed coffee and alcohol causes it to be loudest. Why that should be so is a mystery. The good news is that if I hear it in the morning, I know I survived another day. When I was a kid in the '50's, I could hear the horizontal oscillator in our TV starting up. That's a bit over 15kHz. Now I don't hear anything over 5kHz, but the tinnitus is over 10kHz and still there! A prof specializing in audio matters at the University of Arizona told me our brain remembers how the overtones (harmonics) of musical instruments, and fills them in even if we can't hear them. So music sounds just as rich today as it did 50 years ago. (I'm a retired Electrical Engineer, MIT '60 and worked with digital signal processing of audio prior to retirement, among other things in a 44 year career.)

Another two cents..
I am in no way disputing your scientific / medical statements in your comment. There must be other sources / causes beyond what you mention, though.
I have never, never ever been able to endure music played loudly...radio, tv, live, doesn't matter.
In my late teens, when I found out about the existence of earplugs, I wondered why no one ever told me about them previously....sure do work better than toilet paper.
Since finding out about hearing protection devices, I've always gratefully worn them when working around machinery. People will sometimes walk up and shout instead of talking, and I'll tell them no need for shouting, just talk, then they shout, "BUT YOU'RE WEARING EARPLUGS !!!" They are usually shocked to find out I hear conversation level speaking better while I'm wearing earplugs (or muffs) than they do when they're not.

When I was three (or maybe four) I would mention to people how loud and high-pitched the air is when it moves. (At that age, I had no idea what I was hearing, never heard about tinnitus until years later.) I got such ridicule and putdowns for telling people I was "hearing the air move", I just quit mentioning anything about it.

They'd be greater if they cured the affliction. 😊
