I got a scam email, supposedly from a friend.

"Hi, Jerry. Let's due lunch. Give me a call. 845 -------"

The "due" got my attention, so I checked the phone number, and it's not his, but the email address is correct.

You gotta be careful.

How come these scammers messed up on their spelling? I guess if I were to scam I would check and recheck even ask someone who is fluent in the language to check it.

You must have a lot of friends who can’t spell and use text to ask you out to lunch, to check out the phone number.

Email addresses, like caller ID, can be spoofed.

The misspelling was the first "check." The different phone number was the second.

The scammers sometimes intentionally include spelling or grammar errors figuring if their potential victims aren't bothered by it they will be more susceptible to the scam.

They include spelling errors and different fonts/characters because many people create filters using the correct spelling to dump them in the spam folder or just delete them.
A misspelled word gets past the filters. Can't filter every possible variation of multiple words and they know that!

Supposedly, it throws off filters and allows messages to get through.

US spelling is often a bit different to UK spelling.

Mostly these are not UK variations but purposely done to avoid filters.

What has happened to “buyer beware? If someone advertised a sale on the “Broklyn Bridge” would the first thought be “it’s spelled wrong, I’ll look into it” or this is obviously a scam and I will just throw it away.

I usually look past a misspelled word or two in texts (like here) - typos, small keyboard, auto corrupt,...
But in emails, I'm highly suspicious of them. Especially if they use letters with áccents.
