My sentiments exactly, enough of this United States land of free hand out.
That includes some of our citizens who used food stamps to buy chips and candy. They when they weight four hundred pounds and have dieabeties expect the govt to take care of them then to.
I think Emma was from a different time and was did not think what is happening at BOTH southern and northern border would ever happen or even crossed her mind.

When that was written, there was no requirement to obtain a visa or get a green card.
You just merely showed up and you were allowed in.

But they showed up legally with the mind set of to assimilate themselves into our culture by learning our language, going to work, and not look for government handouts.
The sad thing here is that we do need immigrants in professions - we are critically short after COVID of nurses. The
immigration of skilled workers is essential.
Several years ago, a friend of my daughters that came to the US as a child was threatened with deportation. It was a fight that went on for years. She is a trained economist doing really good work. Fortunately she fell in love with an American and married. Even then she had to prove the marriage wasn't a sham.

Ellis Island opened in the 19th century. The immigration act became law in 1924. That act set quotas for each country.
