R10 Problem

I wanted to use my R10 to shoot photos of the grand kids, but the battery was dead. So, I put in a fresh battery and shot about 20 photos, shut the camera off, and put it in the cabinet. Yesterday, just three weeks later, went to use it and the battery was dead again. Is this a common occurance with the R10? Is the battery functioning when the camera is shut off? I don't have this issue with my R6, and never had the issue when I had DSLRs.

You didn’t say how long you’ve owned the R10 or the battery. What you are describing is generally a symptom of a battery that surpassed its useful life. Were both the oem battery or an off-brand? If you haven’t already, charge the oem battery and see if the problem persists. If so and you feel comfortable with the troubleshooting, I suggest calling Canon. I have a R5 and it’s not unusual for it to sit on a shelf months without use and its battery still has a charge when I periodically check it.

I have an R10 and have not experienced this problem. I use only OEM batteries. The battery I have in it now has been in for about a month and still shows a full charge. Do you have the latest firmware installed? Perhaps a call to Canon is in order. BTW, the R10 is a great camera.

I bought the R10 used on Ebay in May of this year. It came with one Canon battery (don't know how old the battery was). I bought two more Kaster batteries on Amazon (never had any problems with Kaster batteries). One of the Kasters was in the camera before I took it out to take photos of the grand kids, and it was dead. I put in a charged Canon battery, took the photos, shut the camera down, and put it in the cabinet. About three weeks later, the Canon battery was dead.

I will check to see if I have the latest firmware this evening. Do you think that may be caysing the problem?

With my daughters Nikon D5600 even when turned off the bluetooth connection remained active continually looking to pair with her iPhone and iPad - ended up flattening the battery in a couple of days! Fixed it by turning off bluetooth. Might be a similar problem with your Canon? Cheers JohnR

Make sure to turn off the WIFI and bluetooth when not it in use. Put them in airplane mode, I found that has eliminates the battery drain when the camera is off.

Also some lens adapters will cause battery drain if left on the body. If I remember correctly it was Viltrox that had that issue. Something to think about if you are using no native mounted lens.

I have an R10 and have never experienced this issue and there are times when my camera goes weeks or months with no use. There are several possible culprits. Defective or worn-out batteries, a defect in the camera, or something left enabled on the camera.

I think the first thing I would do is go over the camera's menu and make sure wifi, Bluetooth and GPS are all disabled. I never use any of these so I make sure they are disabled when I first purchase the camera. Also you may want to remove the lens if it has lens stabilization. It may be stuck on or enabled constantly.

The only way I know to eliminate the batteries as suspects is to try them in another camera if you have a compatible one available or buy a new battery to try in your R10.

However, if you have multiple batteries and ALL of them are having the same issue in your R10 then I would suspect the R10 or lens has an issue.

Try charging the battery and leave it out of the camera. See if it loses power at the same rate after 3 weeks.

How, or not, did you resolve the issue?
