I have a good friend who is planning a vacation to Alaska. He knows nothing about photography. He will be on a cruise ship and has several excursions planned. Much to my surprise, his budget is under $1,000. Any recommendations?

We all know that cameras in the under $1000 range are diminishing because smartphones have become so good. If the friend needs a camera in their hands, both the Panasonic ZS80 and FZ300 are about $450 and have capable auto settings.

Higher priced with a bigger sensor is the ZS200 at $650.

Always loved in wet, rugged conditions is the Olympus TG-7 at $550. It works well when the weather is nice too!

If phone cameras get much better, they will begin to replace even high-end cameras. I work with a gentleman who took a landscape shot of a beach scene with vegetation in the sand dunes and a lighthouse in the background. It was a beautiful shot very crisp and focused. He wanted to make a large print for his wall but the camera only produced a 5.2 mb file. I had him send it to me and I put it through Topaz Gigapixel and upped the file to 15.6 mb. He ordered an 18 x 42 inch canvas and it came back looking like it was shot with a high-end pro camera. The detail was outstanding. When I saw how well it turned out, I had to question why I spend 1000s on pro-level equipment!

Just use his cellphone...he'll have a happier vacation.

The OP said that he friend already has both a cell phone and a small point and shoot. The friend wants to replace the point and shoot camera he has now. If he wanted to just use a cell phone, he wouldn't be asking for advice on a point and shoot.

I-phone. I am a senior and have almost totally ditched my Nikon 7200 with big, heavy lenses for I-phone 15 pro-max. That's what I'll be cruising with on my Singapore-Malaysia-Vietnam-Thailand cruise.

I've taken some very nice photos with my phone camera, Samsung S22 Ultra. it rivals and surpasses any point and shoot camera in my opinion. It even has Pro settings if you so desire. Video is outstanding as well. You can shoot in RAW and use your editing software to correct a lot of miscues.

Well, my friend went a little over budget and yesterday bought a Sony RX 100 vii. He is taking photos around the house today and this weekend we are going to a nature reserve where he will have a ball.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I also have a Sony RX10IV bridge camera plus a Sony a99ii APS-C Camera. I have not used the a99ii for a few years still works but batteries are dead, been using the Sony RX10IV since I do not have to change lenses. I got spoiled since I purchased the RX10IV camera. When I am in a photoshoot I always take the bridge camera. Do not have to change lenses and I have a hard time seeing the difference between the two cameras on photos or videos. On thing I can say is that the a99ii is better in low light that the RX10IV. Bit I can live with it.

I think the RX100 M7 is the RX10 IV in a small body, with a shorter lensl.

That's a good choice. As you say, a little over budget but it is a fine selection for what he has planned.
