I have a 5100, trying to understand your problem. The first thing that comes to my mind is that the mirror is locked UP.

OK, scratch that, In Live View the mirror will be raised.

As for the manual, click on the link below. That will let you download a pdf version which you can reference on your computer. That's all I ever use. I press Ctrl-F to search for the word I want - like "autofocus."

There are two manuals so make sure you download the 260 page manual or use the one on the CD that came with your camera.

No. That's just the way it's supposed to operate.

If I'm doing a lot of shooting, I'll generally turn of the review feature, so the LCD is always dark. It saves battery power, and I don't look anyway.

John: As I understand what you are saying. You want to use the viewing screen and not the view finder when you take a picture.

If this is correct, then this is how. Next to the settings knob on the top of the camera there's a small lever. When you pull it back, it locks the mirror up and now, you can shoot using the viewing screen. There should be a red box, sometimes flashing on the screen. When you press the shutter down half way, you will see the camera trying to focus. This isn't always easy, because everything may not be on the same plane. the box should turn green when the camera decides, on a focus, you can now try a picture. The picture will soon appear on the screen and remain there for a short time. then the camera will go back into shooting mode. If you want to view the picture again, press the button with the arrow, next to where the viewing screen docks. To go back into shooting mode, just half press the shutter.

To start using the view finder again, pull the lever again and that drops the mirror. Other ways to drop the mirror is to turn off the camera, or if the viewing screen is pulled out, just dock it back on the camera body. There are other things to learn about the focusing square, but this is a starter for you.

John, you say "when taking a picture".... Do you mean before you hit the shutter release or after? Or....do you mean before? I'm confused.

The watcher has it spot on, you are not pulling the lever back, but even with the lever not pulled back you should still see a list of your settings for a while, til the screen goes off to save battery.

The first thing to learn about any camera before diving into changing settings is to find out how to reset the camera to factory defaults.

Here is the page on the Nikon web site that covers how to change the Nikon D5100 (plus other models) to factory settings.

Look here:

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17395/~/how-to-reset-a-d-slr-to-factory-default-settings

Others have waltzed around the proper action, a couple have been correct. Such is UHH.

This link is from the MFR.. should be accurate.

Another thing is the concept of exploring custom settings. The best way to explore settings is to simply do a search, like......

Custom settings on Nikon D5100

There are always a few, and some of those notable, who are posting settings they use on their camera's with explanations of results.

Ken Rockwell... a reviewer I particularly like, has an extensive list of settings for the Nikon D5100. Here is a link to those settings on his site.

http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5100/users-guide/menus-custom.htm

Let me reiterate here. It appears that Danilo is the only post in this thread that understands your need to reset the camera and start over. I contend you are locked in a menu function that you don't recall setting, and that you need to TAKE THE CAMERA BACK TO GROUND ZERO.... FACTORY DEFAULTS.

Next time you get lost in these settings... AND IT'S QUITE NORMAL, just RESET to factory defaults and take another run at custom setting.

Secondly, the manuals for all these digital cameras are CRAP!! They are written by people for whom our language is secondary, and not culturally the same.

Look for web sites and people like Ken Rockwell who post useful information on Custom Settings.

2 way to take pictures, live view to see it on LCD Screen which uses more battery up and when not in live view you have to look through the view finder. After you take pic then it will show up on the LCD Screen. Go buy you the Magic Lantern series book for the D5100. It is better than the manual that comes with the camera

John, try using the live view (Lv) switch beside the dial on top of camera. Pull it back towards you after turning on the cam.. Pulling back switches between live view and regular eye piece..
