What ever they do - it's about relieving you of your cash - and they're getting clever in doing it indirectly so that you don't realize what's happening. If they find that one of their ploys doesn't work - they close it down - viz ON1.

Total BS. Major cloud providers charge a set fee per TB or flat fee per month, and a major cloud provider has NEVER closed down. Just to be clear, I’m referring to major providers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft or Apple’s regular data storage, not photo only storage or mom and pop cloud providers, of which there are many dozens. Cloud storage is like anything else - buy a well known name brand with solid financials that keep multiple copies of your data at separate geographic locations, and there is NO safer location for your data.

If by “big brother”, you mean a major cloud provider, that is terrible and uninformed advice. Computer professionals know better.

I have spent my life following a rule - which has never let me down - "beware the professionals" (Any field). If nothing else, (which would include knowledge) they have their eye on your pennies.

Then you should get your medical advice, care and surgeries at Wallmart (or the equivalent in the UK). Same with your prescribed drugs - get them from the corner petrol station.

We all need working drives, Local Backup, and off site backup. With offsite being the cloud, a drive in a safe deposit box , or another known safe location. and all drives need to be from reputable makers.
You can buy direct from Western digital , or La Cie or several others. Even a place like B&H offers a measure of security. Buying an amazon or eBay special at a price that is too good to be true will always be a dumb way to buy anything.

I've been around long enough to know when where and how - but thanks for that expert advice.

Me too, and I go to professionals (and perfectionists) for advice, whether it’s photography, medicine, woodworking or computers/electronics.

Fine - and I respect your decisions - but you should keep them for yourself unless asked for such advice.

You are the one who started this discussion stating your disdain for professionals and I disagreed. Any time you say something silly on a public forum like UHH, odds are you’ll get some pushback.

Boy … so much to say but…. I am retired software exec in databases, cloud, big data and now what is call AI. Very confusing information said in this stream:

1. On1 is not dropping cloud sharing which other products like Lightroom, Apple Photos etc use. It is not for storage but rather to share images between computers and phones. In 2024 On1 came out with Max which includes cloud storage for just that purpose.

2. Cloud is a critical feature for the backup of all data. You should be using a 1-2-3 method where you store data in 3 places with at least one of them in another location than your computer. I am a Mac user so I have an external drive for Time Machine (Apples builtin backup system), another for a clone of my drives using CCC and finally a cloud backup using Backblaze. I live in an area where we have fires and have to evacuate (4 times in last few years). For 3 of those evacuations I was away on business. I had labeled both the Time Machine and CCC clone drives to say TAKE ME which my wife did. If the fire burned the computer equipment it was covered by insurance. But what if we were in vacation on the east coast and a fire hit the house? Well both the backup and clone drives as well as the root drives would be toast. But not the Backblaze backup which is now almost 5TB in size. I pay $9/month for UNLIMITED backup and it runs in the background on my computer.

So - am I not allowed to mistrust professionals? I think you are self-righteous in telling me what I can and cannot do,
especially when you highjack someone else's topic.

If you can fit all important files onto an SSD, you could carry it with you. If your house burns down while you're away, you won't be so upset. 😋
