If the cruise is a Nat. Geo/Linblad cruise, it seems that the cruise line has partnered with Olympus (err, OM Systems) as the onboard vender for photo gear. It may be that there will be trials available, discount opportunities, or at least product support. We are doing Alaska this summer. I shoot Nikon, so I haven’t probed the OM details, but it might be worth investigating. Other cruise lines might have similar arrangements.

I have a Sony RX100 IV in perfect working condition that would be ideal for your friend. This is the best Compact Digital Camera on the market and extremely small and light weight with very high quality imaging. It was listed on UHH for the past two weeks but did not sell. It is in the original box with all the components and papers. The shutter count is 618 and it was priced at $485 with insured Priority Mail shipping. It was my back up camera but hardly ever used. My email address is: larryg@goldmanyoung.com if your friend is interested.

Thanks, Larry

I've always been faithful to Nikon but I bought my wife a Sony HX-400 which she loves. It has all the functions of the "big boy" cameras as well as a full automatic setting, it's compact and light and it comes with a superb Zeiss super zoom lens. I often reach for her camera with shooting a distant object like a bird and the results are as good as my Nikon.

Get him a gift certificate for photographs.

Giving a camera recommendation to someone who doesn’t know anything about photography is a waste of time and money. What is he going to do. Learn how to use the camera while he is on vacation. I bet he will be very disappointed with his results.

Putting a new camera in the hands of someone who doesn’t know how to use it is a recipe for disaster

A point and shoot with a zoom lens that goes to at least 600mm or 1000mm (in 35mm equivalent),
One to look at is the Nikon Coolpix P900 or P950. And similar cameras from Panasonic Lumix.

For Alaska, on a cruise ship, likely a large ship, you will need reach (long focal length) to get certain shots, like eagles and bears.

Does he take pictures today? You say that he knows nothing about photography. Is he specifically wanting to learn? I've been on an Alaskan cruise, and it's a pretty tough environment to be learning something new. A couple of ports require riding the lifeboats, which are crowded and can be rough. Whalewatching excursions can be rough and wet.

The three best opportunities for a novice photographer are Glacier Bay, Mendenhall Glacier, and the lumberjack show. Pretty much any camera will do for any of those, including a phone. Same is true for any new camera, if he's played with it some first.

Bottom line...I'd not select a camera for Alaska or for a cruise. I'd select a camera that would do for him at home. It will do fine. And any worry about raw or editing is just a stupid waste of time and concern.

Sorry but I am having a rough time trying to understand how being on the lifeboat with rough seas from ship to shore and back has much to do with learning a camera especially a small point and shoot camera that can be put in a large pocket. The only learning experience would be to not fall into the water getting onboard the smaller vessel.
But I have been there and done that. There are plenty of cruise line assistants to ensure that does not happen.

Yes I know about ASSUME but I am assuming the new camera buyer will not open the box his first 10 minutes in his stateroom and call it good. As one member pointed out, set it on Auto and of course learn to turn the camera on.

I second the motion for a TG-6 or -7. There is a telephoto available for it, it's a 4X that actually works pretty well. And good for all weather conditions that might be encountered in Alaska, or any where else! BUT, personally, I wouldn't go to Alaska without the capability of a good wildlife camera! Don't know what the OP's friend's interests are, but it would be a shame to miss out on one of the premier wildlife opportunities in the world!!! Just my humble opinion!!

I have heard the TG-6 or -7 is an excellent camera, takes great photographs, is easy to use and is waterproof unless you want photos of the Titanic.

A bridge camera with a long zoom range and leave it on AUTO. Or an iphone.
