I was in Nashville 2017 you will want to be i the path of totality there is nothing like it, my house is 7 miles from totality but in aril here we have clouds 80% of the time looking back at old weather satellite photos on April 8th. So I am still thinking what to do and where to go. It’s like 3 pm here so if it’s bad I can drive 5 or 6 hours if need be.

Go to Thousand Oaks telescope the have many affordable options you can even by a sheet of solar filter and make your own. I had 2 cameras recording start to end last time one had a filter that cost about 80 bucks with thumb screws to hold it in place, the other had a cardboard filter that you folded to fit your lens diameter. Both worked great

However you get there, it is worth it to get to the centerline! I drove my family 800 miles to get to Southern Illinois for the 2017 eclipse. I think we had around 4 minutes of totality, but it was was worth it! As a coincidence, the same place we were for the 2017 eclipse, is in the centerline for the 2024 eclipse, but we won't have to drive there. Thanks to celestial circumstances, the eclipse is going right over our patio here just west of Rochester, NY, lucky us!

We ordered the 10x10 inch eclipse material to make filters for the front of lenses, and also cut & taped exact shapes for our sunglasses. Those cheap cardboard things don't cut it with us.

Great filter idea! Would beat holding my solar filter over my telephoto. Thank you!

I have a farm in the middle of Illinois. I had planned to go there for the eclipse. I recently downloaded a map of the course of the eclipse and found out that I'm about 15 miles outside the "total darkness" range. How much difference will that make?

For those of you who know the area, Effingham is right on the north edge of the path, and I'm 15 miles north of Effingham.

If I were 15 miles away from totality, I'd ride my bike to get there. Well worth the effort.

Certified filters in a carboard holder are fine and are availabe for$20 for the 3in size from B&H. They don't have to be photoglass.

Now that I can afford! Thank you!

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. It looks like I'll need to find a place south of Effingham to sit and enjoy the eclipse. Don't know how much shooting I'll do, as I don't have a filter and can't afford to purchase one.

For the annular eclipse in October I bought this on Temu.com for $11.48 and it worked just fine. Also bought some glasses for a couple of bucks.

Solar Filter Film, Astronomical Telescope Objective Lens End Filter Cover, Observation Of Sunspot Solar Eclipses, Suitable For 60-90mm Aperture

I live outside of Utica and we have an 80% chance of having a cloudy day on April 8th there is an eclipse site that shows weather satellite photos for all the areas along the path. The last 2 years we would not have seen it here. Thinking I need to get south of the lakes

Could you provide a link? It might save my driving 1700 miles!
