I remember the first time that I encountered am aluminum pipe wrench we had been working with the regular 48inch and someone moved it and put the aluminum one in it's place,I went to get it off the platform, gave it a big pull and just about hit myself in the chin. Lot's of difference in weight. We had fun with other crew members before they figured out what was going on. Fun times with a great crew.

We have some old ones from the farm, refer to them as "crook clonkers"

The monkey wrench is one tool I don't own and I think I rarely every use it. Google tells me that Stillson invented the wrench but he didn't manufacture it. He just license his patent to many companies to make it. I tend to buy the wrench from the company that has the name on the type of wrench. For example I tend to buy Allen wrenches from Allen, Crecent wrenches from Crecent but now I found out they are not a good brand for their type of wrenches.

I have an original Crescent wrench from the 1800s in my tool collection. It looks like a pipe wrench, not like what we call a crescent wrench today. Back then its tech. name was "adjustable spanner wrench". The handle had the thread serrations not the moving jaw like the pipe wrench of today.

I would love to post a picture but I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, [no pun intended] when it comes to posting a pic. on any site. Someday I'll learn.

When I was an apprentice our class went on a field trip to a Shick Tool Co. in San Carlos Ca. They were making then ,[1968] what I think was the first alum. pipe wrenches. We were all impressed with the light weight. i have one of those 48-inch steel pipe wrenches leaning against the wall in my shop. Can't lift it anymore and afraid to cause it's probably what's holding my shop together.

I think a monkey wrench has smooth jaws hence not a pipe wrench.

Thanks for the memories. My Dad had a fatal heart attack 51 years ago on Christmas Day at age 59.
I would love to hear him say one more time, "Benny, please get me that biggest Stillson."

I told my dad I needed a pipe wrench and his advice was simple...always buy a pair.

He was right.

They do indeed come in handy, Jerry. I have a collection of old tools, mostly because I'm old. These wrenches from yesteryear could well be pre-cursors to the Stillson wrench, in as much as they are adjustable gripping tools.
I find that the Stillson wrench is most often referred to as 'the Stillies'. Strangely, they attract a plural identity in much the same way as scissors or trousers, when in fact they are singular items. Nobody says 'pass me the scissor', or 'where is my trouser'. So to me at least, they are Stillies. I guess it's an English thing.

I'm loving these, the locking adj. is great and I want one, and the V wrench is interesting.
