To the OP: usually I can parse typos, but I can't decipher what you meant to say when you wrote, "please don't suggest aspiring..."
Linda, my post was about a very common TV occurrence, and I expected to have some suggestions from our friends on this forum. The aspiring was a joke and not a typo, nothing to be philosophize.

Aspiring...the act of taking an aspirin? (thanks Jerry )
When it becomes a burden, the OFF button works quite well.
When I had a working Tivo, I never watched commercials. Since Spectrum dropped Tivo support, I don't record anything. I would have to pay more to get a DVD and local stations. TV has gotten so complicated - and expensive.
I have been spooked by my TV set. No matter what time I turn it on commercials pop up, it could be a football game I try to watch a movie or a game show I get several minutes of commercials before the show is tuned in. Please don’t suggest aspiring it doesn’t help.
Kinda like the '60's AM radio rock and roll stations. We had about 5 such stations and spent endless hours jumping from station to station (the car's push button radio was great for this) in the hopes of tuning in to an actual song. It rarely worked and when it did, you usually hit the middle or end of the song. Now it's the same with TV stations.
it,s a FCC Regulation that tv stations can only broadcast commercials a fixed number of minutes per hour: I guess that does not apply to streaming channels

I remember pushing a button and getting the same song on the other station - more than once. Radios were so simple that a child could operate them. Now, you need a manual.
The only way around this it seems is to pay for the commercial free versions of streaming services like Netflix or Hulu. Also TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and PBS have very few and those are self promotion.at the beginning of a movie or show only.
I thought that that was the original meaning of "Cable TV" You already pay for that. More each year.
A football game consists of 4 15 minute quarters, hence 1 hour. Then why does a football game on TV last 3 1/2 hours? I know there are time outs, etc, but commercials add a lot of time.

I'll say it again," The TV is like a salesman in your room trying to sell you something" It's all about "MONEY" except for a few good programs! AMEN !
We watch on-air and cable...no streaming. It has gotten so bad that I did an experiment and kept track. While there are a few exceptions and variations, the norm is 7 or 8 minute program blocks (sometimes 6 minutes) interrupted by 3-4 minute commercial blocks. A recorded 60 minute program can easily be watched in 35-40 minutes.
I believe the standard for american TV is 42 minutes of programme content per hour. Internationally commercials are normally at about half that rate (~10 minutes commercials an hour). Allegedly the BBC does show commercials, but they often seem to fill at least 5 minutes an hour with previews. When I've been on cruises etc that show american TV the level of commercials (and their poor quality) generally get me deciding to leave the TV off within an hour.
Most of my viewing these days is via on demand services, and I'll often skip the commercials on those.
