We love shooting wildlife, moose, bears ect and will be in Yellowstone in May to shoot Bears with long lens. I'm 82 not steady and can walk only short distances. Just go out and do it and have fun.

Look around you real hard and count your blessings whether it begins simply the time to relax and contemplate doing photography. I suspect that you will find much to be grateful for in your life - and more than maybe you thought. Friends are great, but the friend inside your head is the best one. Go out with the camera on Auto, hold it level and shoot to you hearts content. Post a few on this site and you might get some good feedback. Good luck and godspeed.

May I suggest you consider doing volunteer work. There are all kinds of things that you could do that are very interesting. Get outside . . . look around at the many groups that are looking for volunteers. You will meet many people that could be your friend. Good luck.

Dare I suggest trying to chit chat with your wife? In my case my wife is not a photographer but gives me great ideas for composition and will review similar shots and tell me why she prefers certain ones.
As said earlier relax and focus ( no pun intended ) on composition to start would be my recommendation.
Whatever we want to improve. Practice will help.

Hi Robert. I'm not one for chit-chatting. But I do have a bit of advice that may help. Forget trying to learn photography. Let your artistic side take control. If your camera has an "A" (for automatic) setting, just go out and take a stroll someplace interesting.

I'll second that. Maybe first do a little reading on "composition" to help you learn a bit about the general elements that make a good photo. There are some great photography DVDs such as the lessons by Joel Satore whose 3 CD set will take you from the names of the buttons, to advanced techniques.

As for chit-chatting, this section's pretty good for getting a variety of opinions and ideas. Maybe you could ask Jerry for a few pointers.

Thank you all for the input... I have taken your clues and numerous barbs about being lonely "and married". Im wishing to just delete this thread as I no longer want to hear the feedback or get upset over it. You have offered your two cents which I greatly appreciate but am ready to just close this thread out and forget it, yet do not see a way to do that. Is there no way to delete a post in here????

My favorite magician when asked what he thought life was about said, "being inspired". I found this works well for me when I have been lonely. Inspiration comes from within each of us. Hunting is a form of inspiration and there is no more inspiration than the hunt with a camera. Believe me it is more inspiring than the hunt with a rifle as I have done both. When you are out in the field and enjoying yourself, you will automatically draw in new friends. Maybe your wife might get interested in photography too as you expand your skills and experiences. If you were out here in Central Oregon, I would be glad to take you to some of my favorite places like The Painted Hills. Take Care.

sigh, you and the other gentleman are entirely right. Im an ass. I do apologize for that one.

No, you are not an ass, and the poster who suggested that you need to learn to count was being insensitive and overly concrete. Before retiring, I was a professional mental health therapist and I worked with clients who were married and who might well have lived in a cabin deep in the wilderness alone given the lack of sharing and communication in the marriage. My advice is to get out, take photos, join a photography club, and better yet take a photography class. For that matter look for any classes that relate to something of interest to you. It can be a great opportunity to make connections. As far as I can see in this case you do not owe anyone an apology.

Robert; Burtzy said it right! YouTube can be very confusing, that's why I avoid it mostly, and I have been in this magical pastime for more than a half-century! If you want something that will help with a basic knowledge of photography, if you are into a little "book larnin' ", I would suggest "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
He advocates shooting in MANUAL mode, but that can be ignored until you become comfortable with your equipment. In my never-humble opinion, the 3rd edition is the best of the series. That and one of the "Dummies" series of books for your personal camera will always be there for a reference, unless you wear yours out, like I did mine. They are most likely available on AMAZON.
Also, take a basic photography class. A local school district may have evening classes. You'll meet some very nice folks.
Most important, as was mentioned, take pictures...indoors, outdoors, whatever. The more we shoot, the better we get!
AVOID anyone who will bad mouth your equipment, whatever it may be, and "experts" who will say you "need" this camera or that lens (mostly more Expen$ive) to do "good" photography. BALDERDASH!
Even basic cameras are capable of excellent work.
And...if you never wish to advance beyond P or AUTO modes, SO What? Photography should be enjoyable, not a constant struggle! It toook me years to figure that out! Be well!
Robert; Burtzy said it right! YouTube can be very ... (show quote)
