I also have an 18-55 and 55-200 for my Nikon D5100. Those two lenses cover 99.9% of my APS-C photography; my 50mm just sits on the dresser most of the time. I found that I need at least 1/500 sec to stop the birds in flight, but 1/1000 is even better. Also, having a small or spot focus point will keep the lens from "searching" or being slow to focus.
Yes, I figured the "nifty fifty" wouldnt get used much, but there was good deals at black friday so picked it up with the others. I know my shutter speed was screwed yesterday, but spoke to locals at the marsh park I was at and got tips on another park close with several bald eagles and egrets to photo hopefully, will be trying today. Also got my photo processing software setup, in case I ever get images worth processing.
