The tops of the phones have to be within an inch. You have to take steps during the process to confirm it’s what you want to do. You can set it for only people in your Contacts or to receive data and not send yours. It’s a convenience for people who are always exchanging business cards. I don’t see it as a threat.
edited as Mark corrected his original post. This is not a big deal at all…and presents zero security risk…but because somebody somewhere originally posted bad information and because it was "about Apple and their terrible security posture" it got amplified and repeated way out of proportion even though it is completely wrong. Good on Mark for correcting the original erroneous info.

I read that some police departments posted the info on TicToc without checking into the details. Made it sound like just anyone could walk by and get contact info from you. That’s simply not the case.
Not true! The sender would have to click ‘Share’ and the receiver would have to click ‘Accept’.
This rumor is still being spread by the media’. I’ve been using the Beta version of latest iPad and iOS and confirm Share and Accept all the time. Please be careful of using media as actual truth w/o confirming.

But thanks anyway, Mark. I still turned mine off since I am not into sharing stuff that way.
The feature is found as follows:
Go to your device's "Settings"
Scroll down and click on "General"
Look for "AirDrop"
Search for "Bringing Devices Together" and slide the feature off. This will disable NameDrop.
OS 17 is also bugging me to activate Apple Pay. I don't use Apple Pay, but on initial check it seems to be a way to use your phone to store your credit cards and to then pay wirelessly without swiping your card. There are various reasons why that is good. One being security, and other is that I always do have a card that does not read well in some stores . I'm not committing to this yet, but I must admit it looks tempting.

It works great. Just avoid Apple’s super-high interest rate card… I use a debit card instead.

BEWARE! If you have an iPhone and have done the recent iOS 17 update. They have set a new feature call NameDrop to default to ON. This allows the sharing of contact info AND YOUR PHOTOS!… just by bringing your phones close together…even with strangers. To shut this off go to Settings/General/Airdrop/Bringing Devices Together/Change to OFF.
I shut mine off.

All Apple Users: Update your operating systems NOW. Apple just released updates that patch two security holes that are being exploited by hackers.
macOS Sonoma 14.1.2
iOS 17.1.2
iPadOS 17.1.2
If your device only supports an older system, update it as far as you can. If the system is more than two generations behind macOS 14 or iOS/iPadOS 17, you should not put it on the Internet.
macOS 12.x.x, 13.x.x, and 14.x.x are supported. macOS 11.x.x and earlier are not supported with security updates.

Thanks Mark. I just shut mine off after I read your message. If I want to share with family or friends I can always turn it on temporarily

This is much ado about nothing. Users have full control over what is "shared" between iCloud connected iPhones.
