I am probably tooooo old to begin my photography journey but I am Robert Bennett, 54 year old retired and bored guy in Palm Coast Fl. I have traveled all over North America doing hunting with my dad. I was disabled in a car crash in 2010, so am now retired/disabled but still bored and have the itch to do SOMETHING. I can't hunt anymore, but still want to capture the majesty of wildlife. I have been watching training videos after videos on my camera and settings, read e-books I have subscribed to and just want to get out and get to clicking! I am sure my photos will not be worthy at first but eventually want to travel to the mid west/yellowstone area and photo some of the HUGE majestic animals!! Nice to meet you all and hope to learn more from your informative posts and critiques.

You are never too old! We can learn new things every day. Just get out there, Google things, and just take the photos. I mentioned Google, because I used to get library books before the internet and I reread those how to books so many times! Now, I just google the instructions or ask on this forum. There are many helpful talented photographers on here. And welcome! (I'm in the Jacksonville area.)

You are welcome. Lots of areas near our part of the country to get out and photograph waterbirds, and other wildlife. The Alligator Farm in St.Augustine is my favorite place in the Spring and early summer for the nesting waterbirds. And the Jacksonville Zoo is a really good place to practice Photography of animals. But we are surrounded by natural beauty.

Amen to that, I’m close to the alligator farm.. and marine land…. Also lots of conservation parks in the area. Lots to work on. If I run out of subjects, I’ll definitely be Jax bound out the alligator farm

I definitely will come to St. Augustine for the Nights of Lights. Christmas is a great time to practice night or long exposure Photography. That requires a tripod and off camera shutter release. My shutter release came from B&H for under 30.00. Be sure to order the one for your camera model. You can go to my topics to see the birds, or long exposures that I have posted. Alot of trial and error over the years...........and just getting out there. But I'm sure you will not have trouble finding things to photograph in your area. Post some when you can.

Definitely not too old! Despite being new, don't worry about if your photos are worthy to post, post some anyway. You'll have a chance to learn faster that way, in my opinion. Welcome to the forum and enjoy learning and sharing.

Welcome to the forum, Robert! (Oh, to be 54 again!) That 90D is an excellent camera for all kinds of shooting. Just curious what your "3 stock lenses" are? I lived in Florida for 20 years and never got bored of all the photo opportunities there. I did travel also, and really enjoyed planning to go out there and photograph nationals parks, animals, and so many of the interesting scenes along the way. One aspect of traveling that really made it more interesting was to stay off the interstates; take the country roads, stop to photo the many unusual sights along the way. We look forward to seeing some of the photos you can share with us once you get going on your photo adventures.

The lenses I have are a 55-250 5.6 STM, the 50mm lens, and a 18-55mm 5.6. Nothing fancy. Yet. I’m on my way out now to try to get something here locally

Welcome to UHH. Another option for the outdoors is macro photography. Sometimes the "bugs' in our life are fun to photograph and see what they really look like up close. I am 67 and just retired after 44 years in EMS. In that time I was struck on 3 different occasions by drunk drivers while in emergency vehicles, and accidentally struck by a sheriff patrol car as a pedestrian (he backed over me). I have 4 herniated disks and arthritis up and down my spine from lifting thousands of patients, and two blown out shoulders. Surprisingly the knees are still good. I still sling a 25 pound back pack on with camera gear and go for walks and small hikes. I find that is the best thing to keep my bones going. As many have said... just get out and shoot. It takes your mind off stuff. Also, I cordially welcome you to come to Southern California and go photographing sites around the vast area. I am a native of Southern California and still have plenty to discover. Best of wishes and good health (be it as it may). Cheers.

Jim

Well I had a few hours at a local marsh park here in Palm Coast. Managed to shoot 130 shots, however once I got back and uploaded to the computer, only 4 were "decent" the rest were out of focus somewhat, or blurred, especially the birds in flight. I think I know what I did to mess up the birds in flight, but will see next time.

Feel free to most a few checking "Store Original" before submitting, there are many here who will give you tips and pointers. Without seeing what you took I would just say make sure you have a high enough shutter speed. It's near impossible to get sharp images without, especially with a long lens and birds in flight.

I figured that out at the end, I was in apeture priority mode, had been watching a youtube training video that morning, and hadnt switched it back. So, completely MY fault. Was a learning experience, hope not to do that again

We've all been there, at least I know I've made similar mistakes.
