I apologize. the information I had received was not totally correct. I was trying to be helpful. I have received more information:
This is the most misunderstood technical issue I’ve seen in a long time.
This NameDrop feature is not really a security risk, and useful if you want to share your phone number or email address with another iPhone user relatively quickly.
It’s not broadcasting your private information around the room for a nefarious hacker to intercept.
Here’s a demonstration in 45 seconds.
https://youtu.be/aZL5D1k-4aI?si=x42_m-u9lzkr_FcKI trusts this clarifies the feature. I still have mine turned off.

The tops of the phones have to be within an inch. You have to take steps during the process to confirm it’s what you want to do. You can set it for only people in your Contacts or to receive data and not send yours. It’s a convenience for people who are always exchanging business cards. I don’t see it as a threat.
This is correct. This whole thing started with a malicious TikTok posting that was picked up by a lot of people that don’t understand technology. The article I read pointed out that police departments issued this warning, without ever looking at the background.

On cruises this feature has been very helpful. For example, sitting in the dining room sharing a large table with strangers we take pictures of other couples and Air Drop them to their iPhone, and they in turn reciprocate.
You don’t need to ask them for their cell phone number to text them or email address, which could be a little awkward.

Yeh, it pays to use that search bar and do a little research before jumping to conclusions.

Must have been designed in for Japan. Although western society still uses business cards it is more as a reminder rather than constantly exchanging them.
Although this might not be a threat per se (given the requirement for close proximity) it is like the tip of an iceberg. Let them start making decisions on your behalf and they won't stop. In a years time they will be broadcasting everybodies location and details to anybody within a mile radius. Because why not ? And don't think they wouldn't except within the EU.

Conspiracy thinking will get you nowhere. Look up the details. You have control over what the device does.

Conspiracy thinking does get you somewhere. It makes you think about the consequences of letting someone else do your thinking for you (Russia and China for example)
Re you have control over the device ? What garbage, they say that about Teslas and other brands of cars but still there is a high death toll on the roads. So you are saying that everybody who drives needs to look up the details of how their device (their car) works and we will miraculously reduce the road toll ? So a few of us will have control but the majority of the great unwashed won't ?
The only way around this is to make nothing happen by default and only those who need to (bothered to read the instructions) can then turn on what they want to use.
This is NOT rocket science. It is the way things are. There is nothing paranoid or conspiracy theory here. It is what is called REALITY. Those who cannot deal with reality have a mental blockage of some sort.
Thank you! Just shut mine off

Luddites are still alive and well.
Find me a none luddite and you will find someone who spends most of their time fixing or learning how to use the next best thing out there. Find me a luddite and you will find someone who doesn't use email or even have a cellphone. I'm a realist and live somewhere in the middle. I have a smart phone but for some reason have never felt the need to swap anything with anyone else over phones. And I object to anybody who sets up any defaults that require me to spend any time having to research and turn them off. Plus I wouldn't touch anything from Apple because I value my privacy and don't want to have to spend excess money getting stuff fixed. But the main thing is that so far my life has been fine without all the 'added convenience' of running an iphone.
Don't confuse a luddite with someone who must have the last little convenient thing in their life.
Thank you for the heads up. I shut mine off.
