Fuji X-T5 set at medium size

As I understand it, the Fujifilm X-T4 will no longer be produced. At this opoint the X-T5 and the remaining X-T4s in stock cost the same at $1699. I don't want or need the extra pixels in the X-T5 as I have to reduce jpeg size anyway. I am thinking of buying the X-T5 for its improvements and then just setting the jpeg capture size to medium rather than large. Any big downside to this? Again, new pricing seems to be the same so it is not a money issue.

Why not get all you can? And there is no need to downsize in the camera. Do that in post processing to whatever size you want.

Perhaps you are just being waaaaaay too pragmatic (and obvious) for Hawgsville ?!?

I understand I can do that. But I will be downsizing even at medium. I just have no use for larger files that I need to more drastically compress.

My question is basically can I get the same quality of picture from a L size in the X-T4 and a M in the X-T5? I need to buy one or the other and the price is essentially no factor. I can stick with the X-T4 which produces pictures nearer the size I want or buy the X-T5 because it has some improvements over the X-T4 if I can keep picture size down.

Now, those may not be the important factors for some of you. Bottom line: will I lose anything by shooting in M on X-T5 versus L on X-T4?

Do you know for sure that you will never need or want the additional resolution? There is no downside to shooting at medium resolution now IF THAT TRULY FITS YOUR NEEDS. Doing so is obviously not going to produce the same "quality" image that shooting at full resolution would. And it is possible that images will have a slightly different "look." But they will be good. And they will be usable. And they will do what you need.

Can you rent an XT-5 to see if you like the medium resolution?

Can you explain what you mean by a different "look"? I am hoping that the pictures should look the same except in very large print size when shot in M rather than L. Would anything change except pixel density?

That would be an option if I am still unsure after reading replies here.

I actually got this backwards. Any color distortion would arise from using a lower resolution sensor, not from using a "medium" recording choice. My apologies. We were watching Yellowstone" when I wrote my first pist and I was more distracted than I realized.

If there is a concern about losing something do this.
Shoot raw plus a medium or even small JPEG.
This eliminates the concern of ultimately losing something. When printing or sharing the JPEG on social media neither you nor anyone will notice anything missing and all will look excellent.
Yet you will still have the raw data available for the future if ever desired.
Hope this help, as from what I hear the X-T5 is an excellent camera.

I love the T4, but I would go with the 5 and shoot at M for Fuji's best autofocus performance and options.

I use a Fujifilm X-T20 for all my staged macro/micro-focused stacking sessions up to 20X magnification. I've reviewed the features of the X-T5 and it is quite an impressive camera.

I have found that the most resolute, highest detailed image is always reduced to the ability of the media to display it. Top of the list is an image produced by a professional/commercial printing source. The bottom of the list would be viewing the image on a budget-based smartphone or an entry-level PC display.
