UV filters are unnecessary for digital cameras. If you want protection for the front lens element, then buy a good clear filter. I know that canon and Nikon make them and they’re excellent.

Are there different 'best filters' for different lenses?

---

Well, fisheye lenses need fisheye filters, so it follows that zoom lenes need zoom filters etc etc. You been living under a rock or what ?!? Try shooting wildlife using a domestic filter, and let us know how that works out for you !

I hear "I never use protection" I say "Gbye".

Ken Rockwell sez as part of the review of the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS: The very best protective filter is the 82mm Hoya multicoated HD3 UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints. $98.00/ https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=Hoya%2082mm%20EVO%20Antistatic%20UV(0)%20Filter&sts=ma

The other filter he recommends is the "B+W 95mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter" is No Longer Available
best Wishes,

PS: I have/use the Hoya HD3 UV above and it works well

I was looking for best value (function/price) for what I shoot. Everyone has a different need and budget. I also enjoy and appreciate everyone's opinion.

why use a UV filter at all? If just for lens protection clear glass of high quality is all you need. UV was for film not needed in digital. I will say i use them on some lens but that was because I didn't know better when I bought the gear, and they do no harm. So if for protection I see your point, and would say any of the major brands will work just fine.

Go B+W (made by Schneider), just the best optical quality. Look for them on sale, and get the best for less.

Cheers

I usually shot street photography and events. I have used Hoya UV filters for my 77mm lens. I am going from77mm to 82mm and would appreciate any recommendations. I heard not to go too cheap yet I need to keep a budget... "want best bang for my buck".
Thanks,
Jim

I keep a CPL on all my lenses. They perform the same protection function as a UV filter. But, a CPL saturates color, can make clouds pop against a dark sky and work to reduce hot spots on shiny skin. I do remove it for low light conditions. They do cost more than a clear filter, but as long as you're spending money you might as well get a filter that does something!

There are 3 main criteria for filters, a quality mount (aluminum can 'gall' and get stuck) brass is better
The filter's surfaces muse be plane parallel & school optical glass, and modern multi coating is superior.
Most manufacturers make several price points and generally you get what you pay for from known brands.
The latest coatings like hardening and grease repellent finishes are nice and you have only to look at your iPhone cover glass to see that they work.
Most manufacturers specify that a weather sealed lens requires a filter to complete it's weather resistance.
It also allows you to clean the filter rather than the lens surface which is a real help in difficult conditions.
When I did mostly studio work with big strobes I left them off, now I always have them on.

B&H has this filter listed used at $64.50. It's what I'd use, either used or new, for this RF lens: B+W 82mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 007 Filter

The Marumi DHG Super "lens protect" filters are very good too.

Both KEH and MPB sites have plenty of used B&W filters in the $20-25 range. Pick the series that Chg_Canon (F or XS Pro MRC Nano) suggested above. Clear is preferred, but a UV, while unnecessary, will work fine as well. High quality filters at a bargain price.

Despite the vociferous and ad nauseam arguments as to whether or not filters provide benefits or degrade performance (similar to the Canon vs Nikon vs Sony or Mac vs PC or…), there are valid reasons to use a filter, so do what you like.

I often find deals on Nikon brand filters at KEH and the reason is easy to speculate. Brand loyal fanbois do not author questioning threads llike this one. They automatically put a Nikon branded (Hoya built) filter on a Nikon lens, and many fanbois are more about *owning* than *using*, so virtually new filters arrive on their "used" gear at upgrade time.
