On those models the total shutter count should be in your exif data. Nikon includes it. On the other hand Canon does not. I own both brands.

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format.

Take a photograph. Upload it to your computer. Find the photo where you uploaded it select file and On a Mac: Under "Tools", select "Show Inspector"; On a PC, right-click the file, select "Properties" > "Details"

I'm going to continue in this thread instead of starting a new one. background, 60 yrs as a film photographer, fought digital tooth and nail. Dated a PD CSI that loved her D100, waited for the D200 so I could use my film lenses. Bought a old stock D200 and a used D200, yeah old sachool always have 2 bodies, Used one had a malfunction, one of the pins in the CF reader broke, was thinking of getting another D200 but dexcided on a refurbished D300 due to the larger view screen. Doing the shutter actuation site, I find my original D200 with 7000 acuations, 7%, my refurbished D300 at 100,000+ actuations at 77%. Should I be concerned? Did refurbishing increase the shutterlife or was it just cobmetic?

Refurbished by whom? I would doubt a new shutter was installed unless it was specified. But i don't think that's any reason for concern.

Refurbished means different things by different people or organizations. In some cases it's a good cleaning in other cases it's cleaning, lubricating (where necessary) and inspection and testing of functions. It probably does not include a new shutter. The D300, like other Nikon DSLRs, is rated for 150,000 shutter actuations, but you can easily get 200,000 shutter actuations out of it. Or a shutter can fail at some point sooner. I wouldn't worry about it. Nikon cameras are pretty well made and tend to last a long time if not mistreated.

OK! Will p0robably lasat longer than me! Thanks for your response. Eventually I'd like ba 7200 but on a fixed income, that's somewhere in the future

That D300 is a fine camera. If you shoot JPEGs, learn how to use the Picture Control adjustments. You can use CF cards up to at least 16 GB. (I'm pretty sure it will recognize a 32 GB card, but may use only 16 GB.) The EN-EL3e battery has been discontinued by Nikon, but B&H can get you fixed up with good 3rd party options, if necessary. Make sure that the firmware is updated to the latest.
