I was a 29 year old minister (do the math!) home for lunch. When I heard I was so upset that I blurted out, "Bomb Dallas!" Not very Christian or ministerial I have to say but it was what it was. BTW C.S. Lewis, the great Christian writer died that same day but was hardly mentioned in the news media. Another president's death that hit me hard as on April 12, 1945. I was walking home from school in 5th grade where it was a beautiful day on Lookout Mountain TN. Someone called out, "President Roosevelt is dead." He was the only president I knew of, having taken office a year before I was born. It was very upsetting, too.

I was 16-years old and a Junior in high school. I was in physics class when they announced that President Kennedy had been shot. Keep in mind that we were in Northern Michigan and it was in the middle of deer season, so the first comments that we made between ourselves was that we didn't know Kennedy was a hunter, since for us, the only time we ever heard of someone getting shot was because of a hunting accident (there's no question that we were living sheltered lives). It was maybe 30-minutes later, when I was in study hall, that it was announced that Kennedy was dead and that it had taken place in Dallas.

About 15-minutes after that, they announced that classes had been cancelled and that the buses would soon be taking us home. We were also informed that since it was Friday, and that Thanksgiving was the following Thursday, that school would be closed for the entire week, instead of the just the originally planned two-days, Thursday and Friday.

I was working in a local grocery store/meat market at the time and being in an area where a lot of hunters came for deer season, we were pretty busy, so my boss asked me to come in and work most of the days that I had off (I was already scheduled to work the weekends and after school so in the end, it was only a few extra hours). We had a TV at the store and we watched most of the news programs covering the activities of the week. Of course, everyone who came into the store had to stop, look at what was going on and express their opinions and views, to say nothing about speculating what actually happened and who was ultimately responsible. While the term 'conspiracy theory' was not yet part of our lexicon, you could see how stuff like that got started and what perpetuated it.

I had just walked into the office of the stockroom manager of the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Carolina to ask him to order a chemical need for my PhD research. His radio was on (AM) and the announcement was made of the death. Within a few minutes many grad students were in the office liistening to the reports.

I was in grade school. One of the nuns came into our class crying that Kennedy had been shot. He had visited Muscle Shoals AL TVA reservation a few weeks earlier.

I was a sophomore at Harvard and we were down at Yale for the Harvard-Yale game that weekend. I had a severe Achilles tendon injury at the start of the football season and could no longer play. When we heard the news at practice, I remember all of these big hulking guys just crying like we'd just lost a friend. We got on the bus for the ride back to Cambridge in dead silence. I wrote Gail a letter - we had just met that summer - and I wish we could find it since I remember it to be quite emotional. Unfortunately, it was lost in the 60 years since I wrote it.
I saw JFK only a month before his assassination in Cambridge at the Harvard-Dartmouth game. I still had my players' VIP tickets and he sat only about 10 rows in front of us. I remember his copper-colored hair and deep tan (from Addison's Disease) and him smoking a big cigar. He was wearing a grey suit and red tie. Students wore coats and ties to football games back then. He cheered along with all of us and we felt so proud that he was a former player and an avid fan as well as a great supporter despite being President.

Ft Dix, NJ. Basic Training. Out in the woods for Camouflage Training. DS called us in from our hiding places and told us the President was shot and killed. Loaded up in deuce and half trucks and basically had the next few day off. Maquire AFB next door was a beehive of airborne planes as I recall.

Airman, stationed at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX. I was inspecting a parachute, listening to a radio, when his assassination was announced. We were all stunned and heartbroken to hear the news.

I was six years old so my memory is less about what had happened and more about the fear I felt seeing both my parents in shock and crying.
